i am getting another 89 civic std with a broken exhaust valve which requires me to pull of the head and replace it. While thinking about this, it dawned on me, the dx engine is supposed the same motor as the std engine (both 1.5 DPFI SOHC), but the dx has 22 more hp. (92 vs. 70) The majority of difference must be in the head with the valves and the camshaft is my guess.
So I am looking for info to check if the dx head swap onto my STD block is a simple bolt on? I know the STD pistons run slightly higher compression, will this be a problem? Also if anyone has done this swap, what power gains/ mpg losses or gains have you expierenced? Thanks |

Re: need info on 89 civic std compatibility with dx head
I'm not positive, but I've always believed it's the HF that's rated 70hp. The DX and STD are the same.

Re: need info on 89 civic std compatibility with dx head
I have ported and polished a few honda heads now and I have found out that the honda std from canada has the 4 spd with only 70hp but a respectable 42 mph. The Civic that I did the mpfi swap in is my 91 civic std. It had the 4 spd in it until I found an Si. Later I purchased an Si head off 1.6 and found out that except for minor differences in casting material the valves are the same but the cams were totally different to allow more air to be pulled into the combustion chamber. And with the mpif swap you now have 4 injectors instead of 2 little ones. That is were you get the difference in hp. I now have a 1.5 that is just as fast as the Si if not faster than some. with a fair amount a treaking you can get a lot of power and torque out of the 1.5
