how much would you pay....

I'm looking at 97 GTP, the guy is asking $5500. Has 78,000 miles, its in good shape, doesn't seem like it has been beat on. So is this a fair price?

from what i've read on this forum, you probably want a newer one, the 97'-98' seem to have more problems than the 99' and up

That is a fair price, especially for the mileage (which is very low for a 10 year old car). Make sure to shine a light in the odometer. If you can see silver between the numbers, it's been tampered with.

The price is fair but like any used car regardless of mileage check it out thoroughly. Carfax, maintenance history and possible accident damage. Depending on where you live the NADA is a low retail of $5K, average $6K and high around $7K. The low mileage is a plus. Also, it depends on what options are installed. Good luck!

Sounds good to me. If it was well-maintained the 3.8 is one of the best engines ever built. But I agree with the other guys, look it over thoroughly before making your final decision.

Re: how much would you pay....

This looks like a very nice one owner car, never been in an accident, adult owned. I'll get a carfax report before I look at it but it was purchased in Europe and then moved to the states so I'm not sure if it will show much. Because it was sold new in Europe, it has the metric speedometer.

Since I'm new to GTP's, why are the 97/98 models less reliable?

It's the early years of any car that are less reliable. I mean in general, there are exceptions. The first few years are when the design is young, it takes time to notice the flaws...

Someone on here will have specifics on the issues that may arise.

They are still great cars. this motor is a strong one, it takes a beatin and says 'thank you sir may i have another'

My '97 has 306,000 miles on it and still running good. Guess I got a good one as I have spent less than $1500 on maintainence items excluding tires and brakes.
