Might be looking at a 1998 silverado, anything to be aware of?

Hi everyone,

I am in the hunt for a truck and stumbled across a 1998 white silverado ext. cab for 2000 obo.

Is there anything specific I should look out for?

Any advice or input about what to look for , at or avoid in relation to this would be great.

Thanks to all!

Joe

Wow, $2000 is pretty low if that is not a typo and if it is not i would really be wondering why, that would be pretty low even if it was in rough shape. I traded in my 96 3 years ago at a dealership and got $15,000 for it and it had just over 160,000 kms on it. It was a great truck overall the 5 years i owned it and the only thing i can think of is to check to see if the intake manifold gaskets have been done or not because if it is the 5.7 engine, that was a common problem in the mid 90's gmc's/chevy's. (seems it is on some newer as well) Basically in the 5 years i owned the truck the olny problems i had with it was the intake manifold gaskets (roughly $420), 2 O2 sensors @ $120 each, the power steering pressure hose @ approx $80 and the idler tensioner for the serpintine belt, all in all not too bad at all i think. Most of that could almost fall under general maintenance.

My 1998 Z71 was the best truck I ever owned. Not the most powerful or dependable as some of my earlier trucks. But It sure was the best looking.I did have that intake manifold leak problem methioned by kenny-1907.It is the last year of the 350 cid (5.7 litre).I don't like my 2005 4x4 very much, don't care for the front end look.

What the intake as previously stated. And also I have had some problems with the ac compressor on my 96, and they used the same setup until 98.

Truck Update,

Hi everyone first I thank you all for the input given so far.

I have more info on the truck.

First its a 1500 Cheyenne?
I am guessing thats a comfort line "like a jeep cherokee or cherokee sport ect."?

It has the 5.7L V8 automatic on column the bed and tailgate are a bit beat up but i'll be using it for hauling some stuff anyway.

It has 165k miles on it.

Its 2000 OBO most likely due to its on a naval base and alot of the guys get transfered and can't take their cars with them so they have to sell them off.

Not always a bad thing. Granted its a little banged up overall but the body seems to have no rust or major problems and the guy states it needs a few small things but runs strong.

For a guy looking for a basic truck that runs but that he can also work on a little bit and learn overall what do you all think??

Thanks again,

Joe

For $2000 you really can't go wrong if it runs and drives.

If it an automatic, make sure that the fluid looks ok and that the tranny shifts ok. Also look at the exhaust manifolds, they tend to crack.

1998 Z71 90K miles, just replaced the intake gaskets. Not many other problems. Had it for over 6 years now and plan to drive it until the wheels fall off.
