Camaro Engine
Would a 5.7L 94-96 Camaro engine fit in a 94 Caprice Classic?
Because I have a friend whose dad runs a junkyard that can get me one in decent condition (I think he said the engine had 80k miles on it) for 700-800. Does anyone know if it would fit in my Caprice, and if it would work well?

Well Im looking on their website that they have of things in stock, and the Camaro engine says its a 94 Camaro engine 5.7L RWD, so Im assuming the 8 cyl 5.7 WOULD be an Lt1. Correct me if Im wrong..this is the first Chevy car I've owned, so Im not too sure.
The Camaro engines also have more HP than the LT1 engines in Impalas and Caprice 9C1's from what I heard. I think they have like 300 something HP opposed to the Impala or 9C1's 265 HP. Do you know what modifications I might have to make in order for the engine to work?

The only difference is that the camaro LT1 had aluminum heads, the caprice LT1 had Cast Iron.

Yes it will drop right in, BUT if you can find one from a b-body it will be cheaper and have better lowend than the f-body motor. People get hungup on the f-body crap when reality is the early aluminum heads flowed LESS than all the irons. Yes they make a little more peak HP BUT a little LESS peak torque and do so at a higher rpm AND do so with 91 octane tuning as opposed to the 87 the b-body got and they had freer flowing intake and exhaust since the b-body needed to be grandpa quiet. My theory is they intentionally weakened lowend torque on the f-body to save the weak 7.5" axle, the LT1 b-body got the 8.5" so they set the motor up for max torque as is needed for a big heavy car.
A civi L99 car will probably have that crappy 7.5" it will be OK behind an LT1 as long as you don't try to put a posi in it. It takes traction to kill and without posi traction isn't going to happen, the 8.5" axle is again a direct boltin just need the driveshaft that goes with it. On the pcm the L99 used the same hardware just the software inside is different so get yours reprogrammed, the f-body pcm is the same part too but the software is again different and besides the speedo being way off your AC would not work without reprogramming it. If the f-body motor is a 94 then you will need to swap the timing cover and opti over to the vented ones on your car, as well as the damper hub. If the donor is a 96 then it has the right timing cover and opti but you will have to pull them so you can get rid of the CPS reluctor and put on your balancer hub. onsider a Transgo shift kit in the trany too since the L99 trannies were put together a little weaker than the LT1 trannies, Vette servo and boost valve being the big differences. |
