Removing/Repair Rust before Painting

Hello-

I recently purchased a Red 1999 Cabrio. The car is in good shape overall but there is a decent amount of rust around the windshield frame. The previous owner said that this started after they had the windsheild removed and believed this was the cause.

Has anyone heard of any issues like this happening with the VW, or could it be as they say a bad install job?

Anyways, i would like to have the car repainted and there are small rust spots around the corners of the door from normal wear. I dont mind donig the grunt work to save a couple of $$, but i dont know what is the best way to go about removing the rust and preparing the surface for the new paint job?

Any suggestions, or links to articles that address this issue would be GREATLY appreciated! I've tried the internet but i get a lot of garbage and cant tell what is good info from the bad!

I found this article on windshield frame rust repair interesting. While not a hardcore repair involving welding, this is a good scope for DIY. The key to rust spots is killing the rust or getting rid of it. After that it is just the time consuming process of sanding and leveling the surface for the final paint/clear coats. Prep is the deal breaker no matter how good the color coat goes on.
