Determining Axle Ratio?

Okay, I just bought myself a 1992 W-250 Club Cab 5.9L 4x4 with the 4 spd auto. I'm trying to determine my axle ratios as I'm not certain what it has. All I know is the rear axle is a Dana. How can I find out what my Gear Ratio is? Will this gear ratio be the same for the front axle as well?

Re: Determining Axle Ratio?

Is there a sticker in the glove box? or the driver door jam?

Both axles will be the same, if they arent....well then i would recommend you dont shift into four wheel drive until they are.

Re: Determining Axle Ratio?

There isn't any information on it except what's available in the owners manual. I figured they'd probably be the same, but I've never owned a 4x4 before so it was kind of a dumb question, but figured I might as well get it out there.

Re: Determining Axle Ratio?

you can take your vin to the dodge service dept and ask them to look it up, or, go to dodge.com, contact us, and give them your vin and ask for a build sheet. Whichever you choose, ask for the whole build sheet as you may have options you don't know about.

Re: Determining Axle Ratio?

To get the approximate ratio, tape a string to the driveshaft, then move the vehicle slowly until you have one revolution of the tires. See how many times the string has wrapped around the driveshaft.

Re: Determining Axle Ratio?

Sometimes there is a tag on one of the rear end inspection cover bolts. My 3.92 has a tag that is stamped 3.9.

Re: Determining Axle Ratio?

If all else fails remove the inspection cover on one of the diffs . The ratio is usually stamped into the crown gear . Another way is to count the teeth on the crown gear and divide that number by the number of teeth on the pinion gear .

That may be the best way to go about it -- you get your differential service done at the same time as definitively getting the ratios.

Re: Determining Axle Ratio?

Well one inaccurate build sheet and a visit to a retired mechanic who knew where the axle info was stamped on them (Had to clean it off, crusty mess was hiding it) the truck has the following

Front Axle - Dana 44
Rear Axle - Dana 60

Gears - 4.10

Re: Determining Axle Ratio?

I was looking to buy a 2014 ram pickup. I have choices on a 3:55 or a 3:95. Don't do a lot of pulling but it's one of those things when your doing it you don't want to close any doors. How much worse on gas will the 3:95 be?
