starting up
lately like within the past 2 weeks my 96 sl2 like acts like it doesn't want to start then like a second later it decides it wants to. it only does that when it has been sitting for more then 30 mins. like if i stop and turn it on and then pull out the key then try to start it back up it will sart no problem i did notice that it started to do this with my new key i got from saturn could that be the problem or is my starter or something going. ( car has 56k miles on it if that helps)

my guess is fuel pump. it could be fuel filter, but if its taking a bit to start after it sits, then its most likely the pump. im thinking 96-98 fuel pumps were a problem. i know i had to deal with the same thing. my dad thought it wasnt anything, till i replaced the pump. but because of the extra cranking each time, and the sometimes it took really long when my dad use to drive it hed crank too much, it burned the starter before i replaced the pump.
so first replace the fuel filter if it hasnt been replaced lately. then if that doesnt work, then id point more towards the fuel pump.

depends on if you want to chance with cheap one, feel better with a moderate priced one, or feel secure with a high priced one.
ranges, my guess, are between $80-$300. this also brings up 2 different choices too, one is just the pump itself and getting the strainer, or get the entire fuel pump assembly which includes the fuel pump module and level sender.

i found out something today if i turn the the key to acc for like a 1/2 second then to start it does not do that problem.

that leads me to believe even more that its the fuel pump or possibly the pressure regulator (doubt it havent known of any to leak off).
my thoughts are, when you go to start it, the pump isnt able to supply the needed fuel to create enough pressure. after a bit it will finally build up and start, but letting the car sit for a second or more with the key in the on position lets the pump prime and built up needed pressure to start. now again this could just be a fuel filter, but with the way the 2nd gens have been, the pump is a likely culprit. but if you do change the pump before the fuel filter (if you do those things), change the fuel filter with the pump. also if you dont buy the entire fuel pump assembly, make sure you buy a new strainer for the pump.
