I have an egr system question

I have just gotten my little 94 pickup 4x4 back on the road after an engine rebuild. I put it all back together and it runs pretty well. However, when I'm going down the highway sometimes the CEL comes on. I self diagnosed it and got the code 71 which is an egr system fault.

I reset the CEL and it didn't come back on until a couple days later when I was driving down the highway. Does anyone have any suggested remedies for me to try before I replace the high dollar egr valve?

Re: I have an egr system question

All the EGR does is shove inert gas into the engine that is not burned. If you don't wan tot replace the high dollar EGR just take it off and build some block plates for the block and the intake manifold. It will run without the EGR, but you will be stuck with the code because of the sensor not reading the correct temperature.

Re: I have an egr system question

The gases that the EGR recirculates are not inert. Exhaust gases until the vehicle is up to temp. contain a combustable component hense the need to recirculate inorder to decrease emissions.

Re: I have an egr system question

You know, I'm still driving with that CE light on and my inspection has been out since December. I am pretty sure the problem is the exhaust leak at the EGR manifold. I've been going to school and working, but I just finished school for the summer and I'm going to fix it up.

Other than that exhaust leak it's running very well and it has much more power than it did before I did the motor.

Re: I have an egr system question

If you require the EGR for inspection, you are pretty much stuck. You can try one thing first before you buy an EGR; get a can of throttle body cleaner or PB Blaster (WalMart) and spray it into all openings of the EGR to try to flush out any stuck particles. Did you say you have an exhaust leak near the EGR? That could definitely be the problem.

If no EGR is required for inspection (dream on) you can bypass it and go to Radio Shack, buy a 5 pack of 10,000 ohm resistors, and plug one into the wiring harness where the EGR connects. This will fool your ECU into thnking the EGR is OK.
