Re: home network

Well of course make sure the comps are connected properly (crossover if direct conection).

Then run the stupid "Set up a home network" wizard and turn on file and priter sharing, windows will often not let you share unless you run that first.

Oh after you run that wizard make sure to go in my comp and you'll see a shared folder windows activates by default. Go in its sharing properties and unselect "allow other people to change my files" which Microsoft in its great wisdom decided to turn on as default after that wizard.

Re: home network

Are they on the same workgroup? Can you tell us what IP address each computer gets?

Re: home network

What is the rest of the IP addresses? Can you open up a command prompt (start, run, type 'cmd', press enter) then type 'ipconfig/all' and copy and paste the results for both computers?

Try pinging the other computers IP address (type 'ping [ip address]')? Does it time out or does it get a response?

Are you running any firewalls on either computer?

How exactly are they connected? Through a piece of network hardware like a switch or a router, or with a direct crossover cable?

2.2 Straight six - if you just want to connect two computers and they both have their networks cards free, get a crossover cable from your local computer store and Bobs your Uncle. If you need to share more than 2 computers, internet connections etc, get a cheap router. Netgear are pretty easy to setup out of the box.

Re: home network

Disable all firewalls and try again. What happens when you try to login to the router (192.168.1.1)? What does it list under 'connection status' or 'connected devices' or whatever?

Re: home network

Try and isolate the fault to one or the other. Try this: turn the Windows Firewall on first. If everything works, it's the router firewall that's blocking. If everything stops working, Windows Firewall is the problem. You can add an exception to Windows Firewall really easily, just have a look around.

If it's the router, have a read through the users manual or online documentation about which ports you need to open, or what you need to do to enable Windows File and Print Sharing. You can probably find the setting pretty easily if you login the router and have a look around.

Glad you got it working. (I'll rename your thread).

Re: home network (fixed)

got firewall back up, so everyone else knows, goto start --> settings --> control panel --> Windows firewall. First I turned on the firewall. then went to the tab "exceptions". I clicked on Add Program, then on the bottom left corner click "change scope..." choose "my network" then OK. you should have firewall back up and be able to let the computers communicate
