Tranny Guys??

have a 93 Fleetwood, i know its not a Caprice, but pretty much the same underneath, and this forum is much more active.

93 fleetwood randomly dumping trans fluid onto the catalytic converter. I found the fuse to the secondary cooling fan was blown. Would that be causeing the transmission to over heat and purge fluid? any other ideas other than the radiator being clogged?

What's likely happening is the front seal on the transmission bit it.

Re: Tranny Guys??

just had it serviced, the only leak they found was at the speed sensor. on the tail right at the drive shaft. this is an intermittent leak, that comes and goes.

i replaced the fan fuse, and will drive it a while to see how that goes

Re: Tranny Guys??

Umm, were you looking for guys who wear dresses on Saturday nights, or those with some transmission experience? (Thread title)

I can't help with dress sizes and high heels, but for the Caddy you might want to look at the dipstick tube seal, electrical connector seal (both on the right side, next to the cat) and the vent on the top of the case (on most versions of the TH700/4L60). The overheating may have caused a discharge, but also wouldn't have done the trans oil any good. Time for a change. You might want to change engine oil, too.

Re: Tranny Guys??

i think the high heels and skirt guys are called transies..

ill have to check the things you mentioned, i bought the car used and its not a new problem, i can tell by the caked up fluid on the under side of the car.

thanks for the ideas, though ive never seen a seal leak intermittently, and pour out like this does.

Re: Tranny Guys??

Is your tranny overfilled at all?? Sometimes if theres any excess fluid itll blow out of the rear driveshaft seal whether the seal is good or not.

Does it look wet around the seal? Id go ahead and change the seal. Its cheap and not too time consuming.

Re: Tranny Guys??

its not overfilled at this point. i think it was just getting a little warm, i found a bad fuse for the secondary coolign fan..

so now that is corrected, is there a thermostat or sensor in the transmission to turn that fan on? or is it all based on engine temp?

Re: Tranny Guys??

AFAIK, the transmission temperature sensor will not control either of the fans. Those are based on coolant temperature and A/C system pressure.

Re: Tranny Guys??

If the secondary fan isn't working that could raise the coolant temp a few degrees which would then reduce the effectiveness of the trans cooler located within the radiator (ie. the fluid stays hotter thus expands). I'd believe it, a few degrees could make a huge difference.

Re: Tranny Guys??

If your transmission has a modulator, it can suck transmission fluid up into the intake manifold and ultimately through the exhaust. You would also have a huge cloud of light smoke following you, very obvious. Pop the modulator line off at the manifold, if it drips, you found the problem. It should only pull vacuum and the modulator diaphragm is bad.

Re: Tranny Guys??

No vacuum modulator for '93 - trans is a 4L60/700R4 - could even be a 4L60E.
