Swapped engine by yourself???

I was just wondering for all u people that swapped a engine into a 4th generation hatch. How hard is it??? Basically if u take your time it shouldnt be that hard right??? What is the hardest part?? Also what did u use to lower and raise the engine??? a hoist or did u make your own?? Basically im asking this because i really dont think it could be that hard (b16 into 90 si) just as long as u take your time and do it carefully, torque everything down to specifications, connect all the wires properly, u really cant mess up that way?? Plus i would save tons of $$$$. Any comments would be appreciated - thanks

Nope, it's not that hard, if you know what your doing.

Do you ahve any previous experience with engines?

Do you have people to help you? preferrably ones with lots of technical and automotive talents and experience.

Do you have a proper place to do this? you wiill need an engine hoist to move/lift the thing. Also this could literally take weeks depending on how much time you spend at it each day and how many little problems you run into(i use the term "little" relatively). You could get everythign done perfectly then put the key in to turn it on and have nothing happen, then it might take two weeks to figuire out what the problem is. So your going to need a fair sized garage(DON'T do it outside) that you can occupy for a while.

Are you tight for cash? cause if so it might not be worth the risk.

OH yeah, and if you do do it get a helms manuel.

No, i really dont have much experience besides maintenance stuff, like brakes, spark plus, etc. lol. I have my own garage to work on and one of my buddies could probably help (he has a b16 but got it professionally installed) I could probably rent a hoist from somewhere?? I have a Hayes manual, not sure if its as good as a helms but it basically has everything from tear down to rebuilding the car. I really think i could do it one step at a time. but then again it might just be easier to get it professionally done depending on the charge. Do shops charge about $500 to do it or more towards $1500?? Also anyone that lives in IL or Wisconsin that knows of a good place let me know. I live by Great America so either state is close -Thanks

y8 sohc v-tec--->89 Si. neither of us had ever done a swap on the Si just suspension stuff like struts, brakes, and so on.

the game plan was to have the swap done in 2 days. got it running after 30 mins on day 3. coulda, woulda, shoulda had it done in 2. but i'm not gonna complain.

in all honesty, it really is all about knowing what to unbolt/unplug firts and then work in reverse when dropping in the new stuff. all the plug ends are matched to eachother. so it's nearly impossible (i suppose anything could be possible ) to plug in the wrong ones.

haynes isn't as good as helms. however, i found my haynes at a garage sale for $5 and it was all i used besides info i collected online.

if you consider the y8 or z6, feel free to e-mail me with questions. i get my tech support from: the Drop Shop as well as i send people to him when i am e-mailed hybrid questions i can't answer.

happy tuning! :jump:

I think I'm going to do a SOHC VTEC swap. I don't like the bad reliability or shitt emissions I hear about from the ZC. Plus SOHC VTEC engines are newer.

My brother and I swapped a b16 into our sedan over the winter. Neither of us had any prior swapping experience. I had done a trans swap on a ZC but that was it. The biggest help was having the right tools and a good manual. Air tools helped immensely. It was pretty much straightforward. We replaced a lot of parts before it went in.

Water pump
Timing belt
thermostat
radiator and hoses
cap and rotor
clutch and bearings
axles
crank and altrernator pulleys
alternator belt
misc gaskets and hoses

It took us about a week to do it since we didn't have a lot of long periods to work on it and we needed to get some critical parts in the middle of the swap. Overall it was pretty easy.

cool, looks like im gonna do it myself. the thing that scares my most is getting off the bolts lol. but anyways parts wise the swap stuff i found from hondamotorsonline is this

88-91 (B16A Sir 1) Complete Change Over

Price: $ 1250.00 Plus shipping and handling
Availability: In stock and ready to go

Complete motor and cable tranny(Y1,S1,J1),ecu (PR3,Pwo),axles with half shaft, shift linkage, stock motor mounts, engine harness and all sensors needed.Motors have 35,000 miles and come with 100% start up warranty.Lsd tranny equipped available upon inquireing(Add $300.00 more). Motors come with no sensors broken guarantee.

Is this a good place to get it?? or u know of a better place??What else would i need besides that (just car parts not tools yet). Also worth it to do the Lsd tranny?? And also is my stock headers gonna work with this?? i think it should, will upgrade later of course. Gonna for sure get a CAI when i do it.

Now tools. I can rent a motor hoist for $25 a day down the street, torque wrench (sizes?? the scale looking one or click one better???) timing gun, i have a sort of full socket set although i mostly use just 10,12,17mm sizes, (any other special sizes needed), what u use to take off the axles just a big socket??? um..... some good jack stands, would the scissor jack that came with the car good enough or should i get a better one?? Are there any other special tools that i need??? best to get info from u people since u have done before. Anything im forgeting please let me know, this is just off the top of my head so im probably forgeting alot. I am shooting for september to do this as i have a smashed 97 HX to sell (hopefully can get enough $$$ to do this) and have to really look for a job now lol. BTW i have a 97 HX with 160000 miles, parts that are mint are back end, interior, and right front fender........ the doors, and front end are smashed. Runs great, just needs a O2 sensor to pass emissions. What do u guys suggest to do to get the most money for it??? -thanks again for all the replys
