Re: Gutting the cat
You CAN drill a hole in it, but you will need a really long drill bit.
Last guy I knew that took out the element had a long screwdriver that he was hitting with a hammer, knocked it into chunks and made them smaller and smaller until they were small enough to come out the end.

Re: Gutting the cat
As long as the engine is tuned up really well the CEL probably won't turn on.
If the O2 sensor behind the CAT senses 02 the CEL will come on. If the engine is burning all of the O2 you won't have a problem. One of the functions of the CAT is to complete an un-completed burn by useing up the remainder of the 02. If the engine starts to miss fire or have even minor mixure problems you will get the CEL , whereas if the CAT was there, there would be more tolerance in the system. Gutting the CAT is a Fed offence, if you are looking for less back pressure, try a CATCO low restriction CAT. That way you don't have to worry about the CEL. If you throw a CEL and take it to a shop to have it fixed, they are obligated by law (in most states) to replace the CAT (at your expense). |

Re: Gutting the cat
That's bullshit. I think you guys know only what you've been told and that's it.
I haven't had cats on my '97 since sometime in '03 or something, no lights on the dash. I got my '99 in March of last year and it's been catless since then, no lights on the dash. Everyone's all scared of check engine lights and bad fuel mileage but if you did it you would understand.

I have the light, guess what even with a hi flo cat on my 99 still got the CEL. The 2nd o2 sensor does nothing but monitor the cats effiency. Throwing that code wont hurt anything.
