Question Subaru Advice Please

I'm considering buying a used Subaru. Probably an outback, legacy, or forrester. In doing some research I've found a lot of people complain about engine problems (i.e. blown head gaskets, water pumps, as well as electrical and other problems). I definately want a dependable car I can rely on for many years to come. Whats the scope on Subaru reliability? Thanks for any help.

Re: Subaru Advice Please

You need to look at what model years people are complaining of head gasket issues on, you will pretty much find it is pre-2001 model years. Post 2001 Subaru had resolved the head gasket issue.

Added note. The HG issues are most commonly found on Phase I EJ25 motors. Just because its 'pre-2001' means nothing. The early EJ22 is nearly indestructable.

Subaru claims to have fixed the HG problem with the Phase II EJ25 (2001 and newer), but it appears to be more of a bandaid than a fix
