Burning Oil

Ok, so i have a 92 gtp with the 3.4 dohc and i am burning oil. It isnt a lot of oil, but it is signifigant enough to make me worry. I am wondering what are some possible sourse of burning oil, the only one i can think of is rings, and how can i check to see if its that. I really hope it isnt rings because i dont want to have to fix that. also, if i take out the spark plugs, i can check for oil, and that will tell me if its the rings right? thanks for the help.

By burning oil, I assume you mean that you see bluish white smoke coming from the tailpipes, correct? To check if it's rings, you'll need to do a compression test. Run the test and record your readings, then squirt oil in each cylinder and re-test. If the compression readings go up after the oil is added, the rings are the cause of your burning oil. If adding oil to thte cylinders changes nothing, then you probably have a burnt valve or two, bad valve guides, or even possibly a head gasket starting to go.

Check your plugs and see how they look. If they are coat with a lot of carbon residue, than your oil burning problem is most likely bad rings or intake valve guides.

If the plugs look good then check around the intake manifold to see if oil is leaking from the rocker valley out past the manifold. Not sure if that motor had the same oil pump drive gear the 3.1/3.8L motors have, but that o-ring can contribute to losing some oil over time.
