Custom Exhaust?

I apologize if this is the wrong forum to do this but it seemed right since it was talking about intake. Neways Im looking to add some generic pipes striaght from the engine out through the hood of the car. It doesnt have to be street legal or anything but I want to make sure this would work ok with the engine and everything? Is there anything im not aware of? that sort of stuff. Thanks, aphix.

Re: Custom Exhaust?

Believe me, you really shouldn't do this on anything but a serious drag car or a demo car.

Re: Custom Exhaust?

i cant think of anything wrong with that. you might want to keep them away from your intake because they'll heat up the air and you'll lose power. and make sure you keep your wiring away from them. i don't believe anything will go wrong with it as long as you dont screw anything up in the process, like you want to reatatch all of your sensors if it's fuel injected.

You said reattach the sensors? Because it is fuel injected. Also is there something i could cover it with? Im afraid that something is going to melt lol.

Re: Custom Exhaust?

Use some high heat header-wrap fabric around the pipes, up to where they clear the hood. They will protect adjacent parts from heat damage.

The stuff usually comes in approx 25 ft rolls, about 1-2 inches wide.

Probably nothing to worry about. Do you plan on running the engine for more then 5 minutes during a run? Is there an engine fan blowing air over the motor? The plastic part would have to be sitting right on top of the pipe to melt. Any clearance will provide enough space that heat soak shouldn't be a problem....

Re: Custom Exhaust?

At this point all Ive done is eyeballed the engine bay and if I put a 2" pipe on or so its going to be close. And theres a possibility we would drive it to the drag because its only 20 miles or so on the backroads. Otherwise could I pull the injector cover? Im not real sure what its for, if its just for looks or holds a function. Basically this is a junkyard car thats been sitting outside without a driver door for a year in heavy rain, snow, and heat along with being infested with little critters and Im not too worried about details as much as performance. I just dont want to be on the strip and have my engine puffing really smelly smoke ya know? My idea is run a Y-piece right from the engine and turn the exhaust around and run it up the engine bay out of the hood and put a couple glass packs on the end or just leave it open. And then run a leaf blower up the intake and I also got the idea of rerouting the main A/C duct into the intake? Idk which you guys think would be better, Ive heard the whole intake CFM air pressure lecture but I figure some is better than none. Also I was going to get the chrome spray paint and cover the engine in it.

Re: Custom Exhaust?

i think you might have an easier time sticking them out the sides, just straight out, there would be less to run into.

Re: Custom Exhaust?

i'd be more worried about mud if they were sticking up, i mean the mud flied up and comes back down, it doesn't go sideways, at least not if you're drag racing.

Re: Custom Exhaust?

my concern with that idea is that the car is front wheel drive. Otherwise I would go with the side pipe idea but I have a feeling that all that mud is going to shoot into the pipes from the front wheels. And if the hood idea shouldnt work what other options are there?

Re: Custom Exhaust?

well, just go with hat you think is best, i didn't know it was front wheel drive. i'd say put a little mesh on top of the pipes and if you don't see mud then you know there's none getting to them. my only concern with the pipes sticking up is that any dirt that gets in them is going to fall down into the engine if it doesn't get pushed out.
