Is this fair/realistic?

Hi Gents -
I was rear ended about a month ago and it caused my rear bumper to be a bit off. I didn not go after the guy, as he was probably 85 and I simply didn't have the heart. It was just a tap, but now the crooked bumper is bothering me. I have a full set of the factory alloys with tires that are in simply great shape - probably less than 20k miles on them. They have been in storage for ages. What do you guys think they are worth? Enough to swap for a replacement bumper? I have them on Craigs list for 300.00 (that includes lugs and center caps of course), but have had very little interest. Am I way off base?

I am not really sure if you are way off base on the price of the wheels, but I have seen them on Ebay for around that price. I would like to commend you on your position concerning the old man. I think that a lot of people would have gone for blood, but you used restraint and compassion.

I guess i am one of the ones that "would go for blood" as you put it. I don't care how old or young you are or who you are, when you get behind the wheel of a vehicle, you accept ALL responsibility for your own actions. Why should someones age, gender or race come into play ? So he took compassion on the "old guy" for rear ending him, now he is out the cost of having to fix his truck. I am not saying anything bad against him for doing that, all i am saying is that i probably would not do the same. You never know, maybe he acted all feeble and apologetic and made him feel sorry for him because he is good at it and does it at least once a week because he always rear ends people cause his eye sight is bad........ just a thought.

I would agree with Kenny. Insurance is required for this reason. The old man should of had to pay no deductible unless he wanted his car fixed. Anyways, the price does not sound bad for the wheels, just need to find the right buyer who is looking for stock rims. I think the bumper would be cheaper, not 100% sure though.

Rear bumpers are going for $125-$175 in perfect condition... New TakeOffs are going for $300-$400. Consider what you want worse.... rims and tires are taking up space. Prices sound pretty good to me.

My truck got hit once while I was at the grocery store. Nothing too major just the bed panel where the exhaust comes out was dented. Some people saw the guy hit it so he wrote down his name and number and put it underneith my wiper. So I went to get an estimate to see how much it would cost to fix. Turned out to be $850CAN. I felt sorta bad asking the guy for that much cause he was still in college and when I saw his car (little honda civic hatchback) his bumper and headlight were barely hanging on. But my dad made me go after him because if it was the other way and I was the one that hit him he would probably make me pay for it. I never did use the $850 to fix it tho. I just stuck my fist behind the dent and popped it out. You cant even tell it was there. I bought winter tires for the $850.

You need to try to sell that on eBay. You will probably get 2 million more people looking at it than on Craigs list. Do a search on eBay and see what people are getting for the wheels you have. You can also do a completed auction search. I would definitely put those wheels on eBay. Also, you can look for that bumper on there. You might be surprised as to what kind of deal you can get. Just my 2cents worth of advice. Oh, and btw, you should have at least taken down the guys info. You never know what damage you may find the next day in small fender benders like that. If the old man is running into fullsize trucks, what is going to happen at the crosswalk in front of the elementary school. I have no sympathy for old blind drivers. Noone should be behind the wheel at 85 IMO. The worst in the 85 year old doing 50 on the interstate.

Why have sympathy? We all should be so lucky as to live to be 85. Let alone be active enough at that age to drive. Blind or not.

Plus, for all you know this guy's some rich old dude who could have bought you a completely new truck for your trouble.

Geez, I did'nt think that this was going to get the response that it's getting. Here was my thought process: We do not know the whole story. There are times in life that decisions are made not based on what will be gained, but what you will do to help someone, whether they are rich, poor, old or young. Ok, I understand that the man should have insurance and should be capable of driving. But, how many of us have had near misses, due to speeding, driver inattention, or not caring about safety while we're driving. If you did the same thing and someone let it go for whatever reason, you would be grateful. I will use a parable that Jesus used;

Luke 7:41-43 "A certain lender had two debtors. The one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. When they couldn’t pay, he forgave them both. Which of them therefore will love him most?" Simon answered, "He, I suppose, to whom he forgave the most." He said to him, "You have judged correctly."

Again, sometimes there are situations where a little forgiveness is allowable. Not always, as sometimes lessons are taught and need to be learned.

I understand the opposite reaction. I am a pretty good judge of charachter and nothing about this guy made me feel like I was being played. Infact, it was just the opposite - he was very upset/concerned, even after I shook his hand, told him I was sorry we met under these circumstances, and said not to worry about it.

Stupid? Maybe.... I guess I would rather give someone an equal chance to prove themself a jerk as to prove themself a good person. I would much rather error and maybe lose once in a while then to mis-judge a good person - especially over something like a bumper. It's all good.
