Re: picture of a 97 geo 3 cyl with the timing belt cover removed

The annotated photo from "CityDragon" looks like what is in my '93 - 3 cylinder Geo Metro.

Can someone tell me what the Hell that 'tensioner spring' is for...!?

You have to tighten the bolt holding the follower pully down when you get the tension you
want....that is - tighten the LEVER DOWN! If one left that piss-ant spring to tension the
pully - you'd have a busted engine within ten seconds of running the engine.!

So why have it there?

The photo needs to be scanned and enlarged where the tensioner lever is shown.

THAT is the part that can be confusing.

BTW - you are supposed to take note (make a drawing) of what you disassemble....

You can get into deep shit not doing so.

I know - I've done it myself (duh...)....leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

Wow, vintage mk1 motor there. That's an 85'-87' motor there(notice the engine mount in the front). But, nonetheless, it's timed the same way. I've got my 1.3 sitting on an engine stand at home. I'll try and take some pics tonight and explain how everything goes together. It's really simple.

you don't want the belt very tight on the metro, the spring actually supplies the correct tension. loosen the spring bolt and the center bolt, turn the engine clockwise 2 revolutions by hand, do not let it go the other way at all as your turning it. tighten the center bolt then tighten the spring bolt

Re: picture of a 97 geo 3 cyl with the timing belt cover removed

That little, tiny, one inch, weakie spring is all the tension I need...?

Belt tension explanations are insipid and tenuous at best....

"Not Very Tight" --- "Good And Tight" --- "Quite Firm Tension" - WTF does THAT mean...?

If it isn't right and breaks or jumps a cog because it isn't tight enough means disaster for your Ass-ter.

I need numbers! Something I can get my hands on!

BTW - Where can I buy a decent, used '93 Metro 3 cylinder Timing Belt Cover ?

I Never - Ever see any at Pull-n-Save lots.

Those buggers are quite a pain in the arse to take off and put back on!

At least for a 63 year old with stiff fingers and crappy eyesight.

When I bought the car last summer (140,000 miles) the cover was cracked and had a
nice arc cut thru it by the water pump pully. Also the bottom attachment hole is
broken thru and the bottom cover tab rubs on the back of the main pully.

Re: picture of a 97 geo 3 cyl with the timing belt cover removed

Here is a labeled up photo of my timing belt installed w/o the cover on.

I took it last Friday as best I could given that one cannot get a camera close to the
belt due to the fender space down there and the Sun was out making dark shadows.

I painted the timing mark grooves with "Whiteout" (for correcting typing errors...) so one
could see them better down there in the shadows. Would help with a timing light, too !

The belt is a "Square Tooth" timing belt which I replaced.

I tightened the belt to where I can't push it in on the long (right) side more than maybe
two millimeters.

I still haven't put the Throttle Body and TP Sensor back on. I need to measure the fuel
pressure also. I may have a bad fuel pump.

Where is DieInterim of late? Hope he hasn't departed this Forum ! ! ! !

Re: picture of a 97 geo 3 cyl with the timing belt cover removed

i do have a cover in good shape, no rub marks on it. $10 plus shipping if you want it. also on the bottom gear there is a dimple that lines up with the mark on the oil pump body behind it to set crank at correct position. i have 3 books on metros and timing belts all all 3 just show using the spring to tension the belt. if its to tight will wear the belt and idler bearing prematurely

Sent you a private message.

Where is the oil pump on the Mark I engine ?

Were all Mk I engines identical ?

oil pump is right behind the crank timing belt gear, runs off the end of the crank

Hi Bill,

I am curious, did you change out your engine for a newer one? Around here (Edmonton) all the pre 95 metros I've seen in the yard, have the old large black valve covers.

I am surprised you missed all the drama last month, and why Blake is no longer around. You could search through an old post,(performance upgrades for cheap) or you could just forget all about it, which is probably better.

Great pics, btw, they are a nice reference tool.

Jai
