Advice needed

My '88 Grand Prix recently wouldn't start on the morning. I thought it was the battery so i put i charger on it, but when I tried 4 hrs later the same thing was happening it didn't want to turn over at all. I took the battery and had it tested and there was a charge in it. And I know it can't be the Alternator because I replaced that in Oct. I'm possible thinking that its either the cyclinoid or the starter. Does anyone else has any suggestions? Thanks

Re: Advice needed

Did you hear the solenoid trying to click in when you turned the key. If not then that is where I would start. There are four possibilities, 1-bad solenoid, 2-bad starter, 3-bad ignition switch and 4-bad wiring to the starter or corroded wiring from the battery terminals to the starter or ground. Try the wiring first and clean everything and make sure you have good grounds. Then go from there.

Good Luck and Welcome to AF!!

Re: Advice needed

Yes they do and they should be located at the starter, so checking the starter wiring should find the problem if the fusable link is bad.

Re: Advice needed

when you had the battery tested, did they load test it? A battery can show voltage, but not have enough amperage to turn the starter. If the battery checks out, the next thing you need to check is if you have voltage at the "s" terminal of the starter when the key is turned to the start position. If you have voltage, then the starter or solenoid is bad. If no voltage at the "s" terminal with the key in the start position, you have a bad neutral safety switch or ignition switch.
