Paint question...any bodyshop guys out there?

OK guys, im gonna get a re-paint on my GT in a month or so. Im doing a complete color change. Im not gonna tell you guys the color yet because i kind of want it to be a surprise. I will say, its fairly drastic.

anyways, ive got a guy who will do all the work for 1g, but i have to buy all the paint. How much paint will i need?, that is my question. Its a metallic clearcoat (cost more/less that other paint?) and hes gonna do all the door jams and everything like that, complete color change. I'm just trying to figure out how much im gonna have to spend on paint.

Paintscratch.com wants $80/pint for the base, $25/pint for the clear and $25/pint for the primer. I have yet to check local autobody shops.

I would also like to have a little left over, in case i get a '99 VR-4 wing or something like that down the road

Re: Paint question...any bodyshop guys out there?

Just say no to MAACO.

A full color change for 1g?? You better hope this guy doesnt cut corners. Usually a color change instanly doubles the price.

As for amount of paint a gallon is the BARE minimum. I get at least a gallon and a half of base to be on the safe side. At least a gallon of clear and primer. So you are going to have a minimum of $1200 tied up in materials. Plus you are not thinking of other supplies like paper, bodo for filling in small dings, etc. Its going to end up costing you close to 3k once your said and done.

ive heard horror stories about maaco too...havnt personally seen any of their work, though

he's a friend so hes giving me a good deal. he said he would do it for even less but im on kind of a time constraint. Actually, he used to work at maaco when he first started in the business. He does good work now though, ive seen 4 or five 5 cars hes done, 2 of them gloss jet black, so every imperfection shows. worst thing i could find was a little orange peel in some obscure nooks and crannys...

thanks for the paint estimate, i think 1200 is a little high though. i can get a gallon and a half of base, a gallon or primer and a gallon of clear for less than 700 off the site i mentioned in my first post. They seem to cut the price alot the more you buy(291/gallon for base, 100/gallon for primer and clear). Al far as the filler and stuff, i really dont have any bodywork to speak of :knock on wood: so i can save some money there.

Wait a couple months. Maaco cuts corners and uses cheap ass materials. I bet if any type of body guy would look at the car they would find flaws everywhere.

Blink what brand paint is it you are getting? Quality of paint is a big factor in long lastibility too.

Re: Paint question...any bodyshop guys out there?

alrighty, well i asked my mom to give me some numbers and hard data on the MAACO paint job that was done to my sister's car. here's what she said:

Quote:
We got the President's month special (Feb.) of $199 for the Presidential paint job - one up from the bottom--I think there are 4 grades. There is a $99 charge to change from your original color, and extra for each door and trunk opening. We paid the $300 + tax. I asked if we should upgrade based on the color we were choosing, and were advised not to, based on the age and mileage of the car, they felt this would hold up just fine.
the car they had painted was a '96 camry w/ 150k miles on it. i'll post pictures when i get them (if my mom can figure how to upload and send them via e-mail, haha. parents = teh noobs).

I dont know...would the brand be like Ford if its a Ford color? or would it be the body shop? or will the bodyshop give me a choice?

I guess i might as well come out at tell you, its a Kia color (yea i know...you dont have to say anything...just wait, it will be freakin HOTT!). Does that mean the paint quality is gonna be garbage?

If so, what if i get the Kia base and then get some nice high qualitly CC to put over it?
