Humming & Vibrating sound when turning left or right
My problems are few and far between with my '99 Cav thankfully, but when they do arise they always seem to be of the same nature and area.
Back in December I got brand new set up studded winter tires put on my car - shortly after that I noticed that my car was really loud when turning to the left or right (more so to the right) and their would be a loud humming sound and the dash and related areas would vibrate a bit - more so at higher speeds. I attributed this to the tires (being studded and all), but a couple days back I got the tires off and the problem is still there. My first thought is bearings??? The car is fine when driving straight, but as soon as you turn to either side (even the slightest) bit you hear the sound and feel the vibration. Any ideas on what it might be and how much it might cost? Thank you. |

bearings or CV shafts. Does it click at all?

Re: Humming & Vibrating sound when turning left or right
No clicking, just vibrating and loudness. I notice the vibrating mostly at higher speeds when going around turns and especially when at the bottom of a winding hill for example that requires turning to navigate.
I just got two new all seasons put on for the summer to go along with a couple decent ones I had from last year...so I doubt it's abnormal tire wear. What's your best guess - Bearings or CV? Thanks for the reply. |

it's no guess on this one. wheel bearings, but it's most probably not both. try to listen to which side the sound is coming from. i will tell you that the bearing is built into the hub, and costs around $120 and usually somewhere around $70 to install, but if you have the knowhow, i would recommend doing it yourself to save some dough.

I have this same problem and plan on fixing it in the near future. However, I don't know if you need to get an allignment done after this repair, can someone answer that for me?

Re: Humming & Vibrating sound when turning left or right
Pull the old hub out before you buy new bearings. You will be able to turn both inner and outer by hand and tell which one is bad. It's a pretty easy repair as long as the axle nuts are not stuck.
