Easy Engine?
Hey guys, my name's Lucky and I'm selling my Eclipse for something a little more.. old school
FF sucks so I'm thinking about grabbing an RX-7, there's one right by my house. It's a 1990 RX-7 and I'm going to drop a turbo motor whenever the original engine decides to crap out.My question is, how difficult are rotories compared to pistons? I know some people might ask you this kind of stuff and I bet it gets tedious too (we get people in the Mitsu forums telling us they has a 700hp DSM lol..), but I've looked at diagrams and read up about rotories and they don't look too bad. I just don't know if I know what I'm getting myself into. I know my engine like the back of my hand, so would enough experience with piston engines be enough basic knowledge to understand how a 13B would work piece by piece from engine to wiring to ecu? I've looked at one, and it blew my mind away how complex but simple they are. So basically, I have enough dedication to the car, but not exactly the knowledge. Would the RX-7 be a tough car to repair in terms of cost and difficulty in labour? Thanks. |

Re: Easy Engine?
In my opinion rotary engines are really simple to work on. Of course I have a 12a, which is considerably simpler than a 13b, but the basic internals are the same. The basic theory of how a rotary works is really simple, also the fact that there are only three moving parts internally coupled with the absence of cams, lifters, valves and all that makes for a very easy engine to work on. This also helps with longevity especially with the impoved apex seals of the newer rotaries.

Re: Easy Engine?
god blessed the rotary when he put the oil filter on top of the engine bay
just buy the damn thing if its clean and keep your eclipse until you get it running straight the only reason wiring is complex is because of all the bs emissions systems that are put on the car

Re: Easy Engine?
There's a good chance that I'll get it, but there's rust on the the left headlight cover, so if I can find a replacement for it, I'll get the car. I've been looking all over the net, and I can barely find oem covers, the closest I can find is the vented one, but it's on the right side. I could probably source one from the dealership, but I'm not wanting to spend over $100 on a damn cover. I've checked ebay and found nothing. Any ideas?
