no more prisons

they are expensive. they are overcrowded. it is satisfying to know people are getting what they deserve. but keeping people in prisons, for their lifetime, really does nothing else for us. Sure prisoners can make lisence plates, but show me a robot that can't do it 10 times faster. Reality TV is waiting and begging for the real violence. What happened in ancient Rome needs to happen now. If the premiere was tonight, i would already have tickets to the box seats.

there really is nothing to lose. and with the revenues from the show, they could build Wal-Mart's for the people of Africa.

Re: no more prisons

So, people who are convicted of tax evasion should die?

Re: no more prisons

Keep the prisons for the smaller crimes and stuff that people only get like 10-20 on but for the people that get sentenced to life instead of letting them live in the prison for 40 years costing 100,000 bucks a year just start executing them on television and broadcast it on pay per view and they would make a ton of money and no longer need tax money to run the prisons.

yup, that oughta stop people from going to prison cuz prison is nicer than where they live. prison is a PUNISHMENT. many of the people in there did bad things and need to learn a lesson. we're not providing them with a free, semi-luxurious vacation.

Re: no more prisons

If there's no prisons then these people are walking the streets. How about we abolish the policemen and because that will save money Screw the government, let's get rid of that so we don't have to pay any taxes.

Re: no more prisons

Naw, prisons themselves aren't the problem -- it's how we utilize them. It's not the act of keeping a person in prison that costs money (beyond lights, ventilation, and other structure-based utilities) it's what makes up the process of KEEPING them there. Theoretically, you could keep a person in prison for free -- of course, they would eventually die off, so you have to then consider what is reasonable to sustain a life in acceptable conditions.

What "acceptable conditions" means:
- food considered safe for human consumption, and adaquate to maintain reasonable levels of nutrition.
- an environment free of harmful contaminants and deemed sanitary as according to local or federal standards of habitation (there are many people in this country, and many more in the world living in far poorer conditions.)
- access to resources, facilities, work programs, etc. considered appropriate based on the level of infraction (you wouldn't expect a first-timer convicted of tax evasion or petty theft to be locked up in solitary confinement for 23 hours a day.)
- and, of course, proper incarceration according to the crime committed (you WOULD expect someone convicted of first-degree murder or another capital crime to be locked in solitary for 20+hours a day.)

What "acceptable conditions" should NOT mean:
- access to HBO, Cinemax, satellite or other premium television/entertainment packages (if I can get by just fine with the "basic cable" package, so can they -- you don't need 100+ channels to get the news.)
- full fitness/health centers where some violent offender can come to play and build himself up so he's that much stronger and more aggressive when parole time comes around (nevermind the fact that I have to pay 400 bucks a year for gym access -- why the f*** should they get it free?)
- special meals and specific meal requests. If "slop on a slice of generic white bread" provides a reasonable level of nutrients with which to subsist on, then slop away!
- access to a plethora of free education services. Library facilities available for use by eligible inmates is one thing, a goddamn state funded masters-degree program is another thing entirely.
- anything more than VERY BASIC healthcare services. I'm talking a bandaid for a cut or a splint for a sprain. Any needed medical attention greater than that, and it should be put on a tab, and deducted from the inmate's wages upon release (or their wages from a prison-run work program if the inmate is involved in one of those -- why should the state have to absorb medical services rendered on a drug dealer who broke his arm in three places playing B-ball in the exercise yard?) Anything else should be easily taken care of within the bounds of the system and a budget (which would be a lot lower if the above recommendations were followed.)

In addition to the above guidelines, the system responsible for sentencing people needs to be overhauled. If you're caught with an ounce of Pot, you shouldn't be doing jailtime -- simple as that. Now, if you're caught in the midst of cooking up a nice big batch of meth in your basement, that's a different story. The fact is, prisons wouldn't be so overcrowded and so burdensome on the taxpayers if they were actually managed properly.

Anybody ever watched Running Man? Same thing we're talking about. Making a game show out of the deaths of prisoners. The thing is in the movie when they ran out of prisoners they'd make up stories for people with small crimes so they'd have somebody to kill for the week.

Good idea! Lets start with the prisoners and then move onto the welfare deadbeats.

I'm sorry Yogs but statements implying the killing of people so you can save on taxes are in very poor taste, even as a joke.

And for everyone else, if you would prefer to live under a regime that does not waste tax money on prisons or trials for that matter may I suggest North Korea. I hear they are quite fond of sumarry executions over there.

Or as an alternative, if prisons are those exalted vacation resorts, why not go to one. Its not very hard to get accepted.
