You need to replace the battery. The alternator will only maintain a battery not recharge one. You may save the battery if you recharge it with a charger and see what happens. If it fails to hold a charge after that replace the battery with a new one.

Sorry, missed that part! Check the wiring to the battery and the alternator for corrosion. This will stop the battery from receiving the charge. Also get a volt meter and see what voltage you are getting when the car is running, should be at least 14. If not then the alternator is not working properly. Also just FYI, new batteries can be bad. I went through three one time before I got a good one.

Re: 1999 2.2 sfi electrical problem

so can alternators, as i recently found. if you check my alternator thread from a few days back, my story's listed in there. take your car to autozone (u.s) or part source (canada), they should be able to test it and figure out if the battery is taking charge. possible problems could be a bunk battery, or alternator (even though they're new), and corroded posts on your battery connectors AND grounds.

Do you have anything else wired to your battery (ie stereo amplification, etc.)? I believe that might have been part of my problem, as I replaced the alternator a second time and removed my subwoofer system, no problems since. If none of these things are the problem, pretty much the only other thing it could be is a bad wire or something.

disclaimer ~ my problem was with a 97 2.4, though i would imagine the charging system is similar. hope this helps.
