2000 Lunima - need to change battery

Ok I need to change the battery in my 2000 Lumina...however I don't even know where it is ..help where is my battery and how do I change it

OK.

First, go drink a beer. You're in for a treat. You will be better off slightly sedated.

Next, remove the little fasteners that hold your windshield washer resevoir in. I think there is a 10mm bolt or two also. As you pull it up out of there, disconnect the pump wiring and tubing. Set the whole thing off to the side.

Now you'll see the battery under there. You'll also notice there is a brace running from the side to the core support, that obstructs the battery. Take the bolts outta the core support side, and swing the brace out of the way.

Take care as you do, to not break the circuit breaker center, do whatever seems appropriate to avoid that (there are several ways).

Noe slip a 5/16" (or 8mm) wrench down to the terminals and take them off the battery. No, wait! Before you do that, realize if you still have the Delco Theftlock stereo, you'll lock it out, and it'll have to be reset with the proper code. One way to avoid this is to put a battery charger on low amp charge and connect to the aux jumpstart post and a good ground before removing the battery cables. That way you won't have the possible idle memory issue to deal with as well.

OK, so do what you gotta do there. Now use a 13mm socket on a long extension to remove the battery holdown clamp down by the tray on the terminal side.

Once you are at this point, you can remove the battery, provided you can lift a twenty pound featureless block of weight with your fingertips, because that's all you will be able to grab it with. If you are lucky, the battery has a strap on it. If it does, I hate you. I never get that lucky.

Lowering the new one in is always a good finger mutilation exercise as well, if the replacement battery doesn't have a carrier.

Drop it in, drop the holdown clamp back in, and start putting it back together in reverse order.

I would be highly suprised if anyone ever put a battery in a Lumina for free (not more than once anyway)

It'd be a cold day in hell when I'd let anyone at AutoZone come within ten feet of my car....
