Question cam gear ?

i was just wondering about how much time is involved in replacing cam gear's to aftermarket ones ( Obx ) and also how much hp can i get from advancing my timeing? would it be worth the money to do it or would it not be enough of an increase and just save the money for something else? just a few questions.. any help would be great! thanks

Re: cam gear ?

You have to pull off the timing belt, replace the cams, and then install a new timing belt. Replacing the cams themselves isn't tough, it's everything you have to do to get to them that's a waste of time. IMO it's not worth it unless you've done extensive engine modification in other areas.

Re: cam gear ?

I added cam gears when I changed my timing belt. Right now my are set to advance the intake cam 3 degrees and retard the exhaust cam 1 degree. I did gain a couple of hp, but its not worth spending a few hundred dollars on them. My idle also has a little chop in it.

Re: cam gear ?

i know it may seem like a waste of time and money but im working w/ a 420a here and im running out of "cheap" things to do for a little hp.. what else can i do besides what ive allready done that doesn't involve pulling the motor b/c i can't afford to be down for a few days doing stuff and i don't have alot of money to work with here.. and suggestions would be great!

Re: cam gear ?

I would say go with a bored TB next and get the intake mani to match it. And how about an underdrive pulley? Those are supposed to be one of the "biggest bang for your buck" mods for the 420a.

Re: cam gear ?

Yeah, I second the pulley. I know its like comparing apples to oranges, but some magazine dyno'd their RX8 before and after a underdrive pulley. Something like 10 hp and 13 ft/lbs of torque. I think cam gears are worthless unless you are running cams.

Re: cam gear ?

Go with an UDP first, then get a bigger TB.

Re: cam gear ?

I agree with the posts. cam gears are useless without other engine work. a TB, intake mani should get you 10hp.

Re: cam gear ?

I believe Unorthodox sells a good one but I'm not sure, I haven't really looked into them much yet, I'm more concentrated on my turbo rather than the 420a

Re: cam gear ?

AFX underdrive from howellautomotive.com is another option. I have that on my car, and yes UDP's do help quite a bit.

Wow its been forever since I posted here..

Re: cam gear ?

cam gears are a waste of time. the ECU will retard timing and correct for anything you do with the gears. the only thing that i like about them is that they make my engine look faster. don't get me wrong. with hours of dyno time i'm sure you could squeeze a couple of HP out if it... i think...

Re: cam gear ?

If you get aftermarket cams, than it is advisable to get adjustable cam gears.

I agree, but putting cam gears on a stock car with not many other mods is pretty pointless.

Juggalo, install that TB and get an UDP and you should be pretty happy.
