'02 Mazda MPV Tranny Question

My buddy just got back from the quik lube place- he had wanted the tranny fluid flushed and changed- but they said the fluid was too black- that if they changed the fluid, it would soon ruin the tranny. They recommended running with the same fluid- but always allow the transmission to warm up first- before driving so as not to damage the tranny- does this sound reasonable?- 93,000 miles- fluid was last changed at 60,000. Thanks for a great forum...

Re: '02 Mazda MPV Tranny Question

Hello

Most likely the fluid is dark because the internal clutches are worn out. What oil change the shop is tring to say is, that the only thing that's keeping the tranny shifting is that clutch material floating around inside. Not changing the fluid is not a fix. The transmission will probally need rebuilding. Several things can cause the clutches to be worn, heavy towing, overheating the trans, runing it low on fluid, broken disk spring , etc.
