Racing Stock

I have a big race coming up with a bunch of co-workers and friends... we're all putting our vehicles to the test. I've got a 01 explorer I just bought with a 4.0 SOHC. If I take it out of OD, is there a higher chance of blowing the head gasket. and, is it ok on the diff to use 4x4 off the line?

First, turning your overdrive off will not blow your headgasket. Your Rpms will just be higher at a given speed when your not accelerating. But as long as you are accelerating at full throttle then your tranny should not go into overdrive. Second, if I am not mistaken you are not supposed to use 4x4 above 30 miles an hour. I don't believe the explorers had shift on the fly in 2001 so cutting your 4 wheel drive at a higher speed than recommended could and probably will cause damage. Third, If you plan on driving this vehicle for any given amount of time I would treat a little less like a race car and more like a daily commuter. As I have watched alot of my friends treat cars like that and they don't last that long. My reccomendation would be to sit it out and let your coworkers and friends go at it. Hey they will need a ride to work when they trash there cars out. Just my 3 cents

I always thought 4 hi was like regular drive, with the addition of the 2 front wheels being driven. Oh well..
I'm selling this one in a few weeks to buy a celica, so I figure I may as well kick some ass with an SUV while I've got it
