Red face Ok I'll admit it this a stupid question

Ok guys I'll admit its this is a stupid question but here it goes.
I have a 1990 full size 4x4
it has a 351
and I currently have factory reccomended tires and a knn air filter and new plugs and wires
but I am only getting about 7 to 8 miles to the gallon. I bought this truck knowing it was a beast. But shouldnt I be getting better gas mileage than that?
or what can I do to improve it.
heck I knew it would be bad but I'm lucky to get 200 miles to the tank. and a ank runs me 80.00

that sounds about right for mileage, not much you can do to help it out without throwing out the seats, spare tire, carpet ect...to reduce the weight...

Re: Ok I'll admit it this a stupid question

My 5.8 would get close to 300 on a full tank. (I would run it down to it's last eighth, tho.) Check your tire pressure(s). All in all, that's the biggest mpg robber out. (I notice you left your tire size out...stockers?)

Re: Ok I'll admit it this a stupid question

Sounds about right. I have a 1991 351 with 33' mud grip tires and i get about 8mpg city and about 7mpg highway. But on the other hand, my girlfriend has a 1995 Bronco 351 with 32' lt tires and she gets 12-14mpg

Yes they are stock, I just cant seem to do any better on gas. I get about 250 to the tank. I only drive city about 8 miles a day but I cant get any better I even bought those stupid tire caps that showw the pressure so i didnt have to worry about them being low. theres got to be something I can do

Okay, are all Bronco's made to get crappy mileage? Most of the posts are saying under 10 mpg. Two weeks ago I made a trip out of town with our 78 Bronco and we got 14 mpg! Granted, thats highway mileage. But thats also running 35's pushed by a 429. Guess we should count ourselves lucky.

I have a 88 bronco and I was hating the gas milage. I actually changed out the tranny and put overdrive in. I get much better gas milage on the interstate now.

take out the back seat, and now that it's summer you can take off the top, that will get rid of about 300 pounds, that's gotta help some. i have a 83 with a built 351 pushin just over 300hp and 350 torque, and i get about 8 also but i have the top and seat in most of the time.

Re: Ok I'll admit it this a stupid question

200 miles to gallon something is wrong. I have 94 bronco that i just bought and I came back from Winnemucca, NV. to Sacramento, CA. 295/300 miles and had a 1/4 tank left over. I would take it to get it checked.

Re: Ok I'll admit it this a stupid question

I have an 89, 351 and get 10 to 11 in the city and around 12 on the highway. It has a 3 speed auto transmission which hurt the mileage. If you have a 3 speed, this will hurt mileage. 7 to 8 is too low. Here are some things I would check.

1. Tire pressure
2. Distributor cap/rotor and timing correct.
3. Check engine codes to see if there is any controls part malfunctioning intermittently.
4. Try a cheap injector cleaner, a lot of folks have luck with Lucas UCL.
5. You may have a compression problem, check compression on all cylinders.

Good luck

Re: Ok I'll admit it this a stupid question

The computer system needs to get around 192 degrees F to work properly. If you put in a 180 degrees F thermostat the computer thinks the engine is cold and gives it extra fuel. This is a major cause of poor mileage. When they had the old throttle body fuel injection you could actually see a big difference in the amount of gas the injectors put out.
