Lightbulb 79 rear brake conversion

I have a 80 K5 blazer with 79 8 lug rear ends under it. The truck has been lifted and is riding on a 35in tire, so you now it doesn't stop the best in the world. So, I was thinking about upgrading the rear brakes to disc. I'm a poor boy just like the most of use, so i was wondering what would be the cheapest and best way to do the conversion.

Re: 79 rear brake conversion

I have a 79 3/4 ton truck that I bought new in 79. It doesn't get driven much but I keep it to pull a 24 foot goosneck. When it is empty the back brakes are so sensitive I keep sliding the rear wheels. It has a 14 bolt FF axle with 33" tires and two side mount toolboxes and a headache rack so even empty it is still not light in the rear.

I would tend to think that either the wheel seals are leaking a little and keeping the brakes slick or that the proportioning valve is not sending enough fluid to the rear brakes to fully engage them.

Do you still have the original proportioning valve on it or did you upgrade it when you swapped the axles?

For the rear disc brakes I don't have a clue. I read an article about it in the Petersens 4 Wheel and Offroad may issue. The disc brakes came from GeartechHD (www.geartechhd.com) but was part of a kit to convert to 5 or 6 lug hubs. It would be worth a look to see what else they have.

Re: 79 rear brake conversion

Plan on spending around $2000 for a conversion kit.

Exclamation Re: 79 rear brake conversion

I think I may have found something. It is a bold on job from tellico4x4 that uses 3/4 front calipers and rotors with there brackets. They are only $110 but you have to supply rotors calipers and everything else. here is were you can see them

http://www.tellico4x4.com/catalog/pr...ducts_id/22388

Thanks for all your feed back.

Re: 79 rear brake conversion

I looked at the kit and that would save a ton of money. I guess that the rotor for a 3/4 truck 4x4 with out the hub attached would work. You will have to find an adapter to hook up the brake hoses.
