302 with a holley 4bbl carb

i have a 71 mustang with a 302 and currently it's got a autolite 2100 on it. i got a holley 4bbl carb for it from a guy i know. i think it's a 750cfm carb but i might be off. i know it's a little over kill but i'm gonna play with it to get it right. anyway i wanted to know when's the choke needed on the motor? just as soon as the engine starts can it be taken completely off or does it need to slowly come off. the carb's #'s are list-3230 and the other #'s are 6r2739 B

504-which is the date code. thats it. i got no other info on it. i want to put the proper choke on it but if i don't really need it then i'm gonna leave it alone. all it's got now is one to use with a cable. do i really need it or what?

Re: 302 with a holley 4bbl carb

Is this a 4150 or 4160 style carb? Sounds like it may be a 4160. A pic would help alot. Give us some more details.. double pumper? single 4160 style? mechanical or vacuum secondaries? Sounds like a manual choke. I hope its not a 750 to be honest with you. If so then it will be hard to tune.

Re: 302 with a holley 4bbl carb

Does it have a manual choke? Does it have vacuum or mechanical secondaries? The only reference I could find online was the 3230 list carb being stock on a '65 Chevy 327.

My 650 pumper has a manual choke, but I don't use it. I have to pump the gas a little to start it and keep it running for about a minute, but even on a cold day it will idle alright after that.

Re: 302 with a holley 4bbl carb

it's a single pumper. vacuum secondaries. it looks like manual choke. fuel goes into it on one side and has a tube the transfers it over. the 2100 i got on the car i turned the choke spring on it so it never comes on and it's like you said. u have to pump the gas and what i found was that when you first crank it over you have to hold it a bit and then once it starts you can let it idle on its own. it does seem to hesitate while it's cold. what else you want to know just ask. the rebuild kit i got says it works with 3160, 4150 and 4160.

Re: 302 with a holley 4bbl carb

Are the numbers you posted the only ones that you can find on the carb? Maybe you could go to www.summitracing.com and find a picture of what the carb looks like and post a pic.

Re: 302 with a holley 4bbl carb

the part for summit is HLY-0-8007. thats almost what it looks like. by looking it up it looks more like a 600 cfm carb which is fine. still need to know about the choke.

Re: 302 with a holley 4bbl carb

If its properly tuned you really wont need a choke. But if you want to use the choke then yes just close it when you are first starting the car and open it (if manual choke) as the idle improves. In my old '66 mustang coupe I couldnt open the choke too fast without killing the motor, which is common.

Re: 302 with a holley 4bbl carb

Just looked at the link. I've got a 4160 4bbl too. It needs a rebuild bad though. I may get bored and play with it after my car is running.
