VIN confusion

Hey Guys...

I went to a site to decode my VIN, and i have become utterly confused
the number in question is
2G1AN6999E9269856
If you look at the eighth character it tells you what engine you have.
the nine indicates that the standard engine on my car is a, get this, 98hp L4, with a 2Bbl carb.
UH.....
anyone know why this is, or what is going on here,

Re: VIN confusion

According to a quick carfax scan, the car is a 1984 Caprice Classic 4dr with a 3.8l 2bbl V6, built in Canada. Double-check your VIN codes!

Re: VIN confusion

Wow. The only thing I can come up with is that there is some misinterpretation of the alphanumeric on the vehicle. If you have the title, it should be clear on that.

Re: VIN confusion

How did you get a "2" for a beginning character on a B-car? Aren't they all from Arlington? That would be a "1" (US produced).

Re: VIN confusion

Nope, not all were made in Arlington. Mine was made in Janesville, WI. Lots of them in the early-mid 80's were made in Canada.

Re: VIN confusion

I didnt do carfax, but i did look on a caprice website. the first number is definatley a 2, and the engine code is a 9. maybe the site is wrong. why would there be an 98hp L4 in a caprice anyway?

There is not. GM uses different alphanumeric codes for different engines in different model years. For example, in 1976, "H" would be the 350 option, the next year "H" was LG4 305 and "L" was LM1 350, but in 1988 the LM1 350 was VIN code 6. Confused?

My money is on the website being incorrect.
