Question 76 Tyre /Tire size

I havent posted anything for some time due to work and other considerations but would be gratefull for some help on this problem. I want to fit taller wheels and lower profile tyres to our 76 T/A and have no idea how to work out the relevant sizing ?... At present the front are (as far as i know )standard width and hight, is it any advantage to handling if they are also wider and if so what size ?
The back ones are slightly taller and about 2 inches wider. At the end of the day both front and back must be the same hight overall as it has a locking diff and I dont want to be carrying two spares round in an allready small trunk space. Hoe to post some photos when I can figure out how to

It's reasonably easy. Circumference of the tire is the concern. If you want all four tires to be the same circumference, then you need to pick a size that will fit your car. Lets say it you have a 15" wheel now with 255/60/15 tires. If that tire height is OK, then measure the circumference of the tire. That will be your magic number. Then go looking for the wheel you want - lets say you find a 17" wheel that floats your boat. Next, take a look at 17" tires with the same circumference as the 255/60/15. You can go 50 or 40 (rather than 60) to get the width and circumference you want in the 17" tire. But stick with the circumference measurement. Most tire dealers can guide you if you know the circumference you want.
