M22 Out!
OKOKOK!!! Started 12 PM on Friday - Finished 4AM. (First day off in 3.5 months - except my birthday and didn't want to waste it).
I'm getting cable internet at home today so I'll post up some picks. haHAH! - driveshaft wasn't difficult, trans was a BITCH (no room), and I wanted to make sure I had everything separated and all so I would remember what went where when it was time to sew it up. The trans apparently has to be mounted to the motor and dropped in, because there's no room around the shift rods and inspection plate to get to the top 2 bolts that mount the trans to the engine. (Thank GOD I'm going to be pulling the engine too otherwise you'd probably here me cussing from over here.) Now that I have it out, I ordered the rebuild kit, and my buddy is coming over this or next weekend to pull the motor so we can redo some gaskets, put new headers on and figure out what the compression issue is stemming from. AND BY THE DAMNED WAY.... When I bought the car and had it make inspection legal it included lengthening the exhaust so that it dumped just in behind the rear wheels. Well while removing the driveshaft, I was staring at some print on the new exhaust the guy put it, and almost blew a few blood vessels when I saw it had 2.5" stamped on it! So that means this guy put about 3' of 2.5" ehxahust pipe on the end of my 3" exhaust. How bad is that? Is it like totally cancelling out the benefits of a 3" exhaust??? I'm thinking of cutting that shit off there and putting turndowns back on.Anyhoo, I'll post up some pics later to show off my new found talents. ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- I really want to take this time to say thank you to all of you guys. I would never be able to do this stuff without your help. It's nice to know that there are still decent people in this world who are willing to help other people out because they want to and expect nothing in return. Again, thank you. |

Re: M22 Out!
So im guessing you're going to cut off the 2.5'' and replace it with 3''?
Nice to see that you're moving along quickly too.

Re: M22 Out!
Yeah, I'm thinking 3" or 3.5" turndowns.
I can't believe that stupid bastard put 2.5" exhaust on the end of a 3" exhaust. |

Re: M22 Out!
Jim, are you replacing all the gear in the trans? They need to be pressed on/off, fyi.
You will also need a set aof snap ring pliars for the trans and u-joints. Oh, and a punch (not in the nose, a brass one) |

Re: M22 Out!
Not replacing gears, no serious wear or anything - WOOOHOOOO! Replacing synchro's etc though. I did plan on replacing u-joints while I had the drive shaft out though... maybe even replacing driveshaft while I'm at it (ohhhhh Joooohhhn, $$??
)T56 - not yet... still looking into it though... if I could sell the M22 (rebuilt) for a grand or so w/o bellhousing - and if a T56 will mate up to the bellhousing I have (read where it would / read where it wouldn't - wtf???) I'll sell M22 and jam a T56 in there... somehow. Hey Dylan... you forgot beer on that list of needed implements.

No I didn't I told you, You bring the cheesesteaks, not cheesecakes and I'll supply the beer and REAL pizza. I figured I got confused with the cheeksecake thing because we've got a few good places around. I would have had a kegger ready in the waiting.

Up and prepped for surgery:
![]() Not much room... Hafta take inspection plate off to remove trans / bellhousing bolts... Can't see it in this pic.. but there's oil and trans fluid all over the place. NEEDS gaskets. ![]() No wonder the speedo don't work (rat's nest... bad pic) ![]() Driveshaft & Trans Out... yeah yeah yeah - workbench is a mess. ![]() Trans & Inspection plate: ![]() Inside Trans - bad pic but pretty damn clean in there, no chipped gears, nothing worn, nice, pretty sharp edges... I was surprised. ![]() Future Maro Drivers...

Re: M22 Out!
Well as far as the fluid being clean... don't know cause this is the first time I've seen it, but didn't look too healthy to me. Lotsa hazy shit in there... shavings??? from the bearings / synchros??? Don't know but the gears look like they're in good shape to me. I had someone email me a pic of a set of new gears (for pricing, etc) and when I saw what mine looked like in comparision to his new gears... I'm happy.
Dave.. Re bellhousing pic... it's still in there, what kind of pic do you need - do you need me to measure the distances / clearances etc??? You don't need it the bellhousing off do you? I'll see what I can get tonight and post it up. And I might as well ask here... 1. Why replace a drive shaft... the one I have looks like steel or something - rusted up a bit, but it is light... guessing maybe 15 pounds or less. Is that something worth doing, or only if your REALLY trying to shave weight??? 2. Oil pan is dented, not huge, but decent enough size to make me wonder about it, right next to the drain plug... which leaks. I'm guessing that's one of my oil loss culprits. Do I replace it, or just clean it up and put it back on. I'm leaning towards replacing the damned thing, but at $300 for a complete kit (jegs - milodon 7 qt low profile oil pan, baffles, pickup, bolts, gaskets) is not in my original budget. I guess I can go with it, but not sure if it's something I really should consider or if I'm just finding an excuse to spend money. Also... if I replace oil pan, do I have to replace the oil pump??? Cost is minor at that point, what $100-$150 or so??? Whaddaya guys think??? |
