Gear Oil (?) or tranny fluid?

I don't have my owners manual and I got a new tranny put into my 95 Eclipse (5speed) and have heard that gear oil needs to go into it? I am not sure so my boyfriend and his friends said to find out and make sure -- the part stores are completely clueless about what I am talking about.

Someone help, please.

Thanks!

It is an RS ....

Here is the deal. I got a transmission shipped to me from some guy in PA -- well, 3rd gear grinds and now when it was started and just sitting there (clutch not pushed in, not in gear, no gas, nothing) it would make a grinding sound. Well, my boyfriends buddy said that there probably isn't and fluid in it. We assumed that there would be since from what I understand it is inside the casing and there really isn't a way to add it (that came from the guy at the stealership, so it may very well be false.... lol)

I've had this car for 2 months and it is driving me crazy .... we can't find anyone that will help us work on this thing. It's too pretty to just give up on ..... lol

Thanks for any help/advice you can give me

Jinni

Re: Gear Oil (?) or tranny fluid?

There is a fill plug and drain plug. When you take a tranny out and remove the axle shafts, tranny fluid tends to empty out the holes for the CV joints. I sure hope you werent driving the last 2 months without tranny fluid in there.

LOL Yeah, I should have clarified that ... we just put the tranny in 3 days ago, I drove it that night for about 15 minutes or so, not long at all and then it got parked -- just wanted to see if the tranny worked or not. It shifts like a dream except 3rd which grinds, but we are hoping that is because of lack of fluid

Is there a webpage or anything that has pictures showing where those plugs are? We can find the drain plug no prob, but the other other way that seems like it could get fluid is would be by taking out the speed sensor -- and that doesn't sound like a good idea.

Nooooo, very bad idea. The fill hole is on the front side of the tranny about half way up. You need to use some type of pump to fill it to the bottom of that hole. I cleaned up an old soap dispenser pump and put a hose over the end of it and ran it into the fill hole.

Very cool, as soon as my boyfriend gets home I will tell him that is where it is located at -- thank you, everyone, for your help!

Taking out the speed sensor and putting fluid in there isnt going to hurt anything. It all goes to the same place. The fill hole works too, and it usually goes in faster with the fill hole. The only thing at the bottom of the speed sensor is the differential which is covered in gear oil anyways.

Yeah, I know its all the same. But you have no clue how much to put in it then. Its just a much better idea, i think, to put it in from the fill hole and get the correct amount in it.

Re: Gear Oil (?) or tranny fluid?

Either way works. If you take the fill plug out and put the gear oil in through where the speed sensor is located then you can get the correct amount. A little easier to fill also. Some people overfill the tranny through the fill hole seeing there is a tube stuck in it and most of the time they have the car jacked up, which is not the correct way to do it unless it is on 4 jack stands.

Do it however you like and what seems right/easier, doesnt matter.

Re: Gear Oil (?) or tranny fluid?

Ok --- you guys say "gear oil" a lot .... we were told to put Pennzoil Synchromesh in it .... do I need to put gear oil in it instead of that Synchromesh? We are going to be trying to find that plug here in the next day or two, as soon as my boyfriend has a day off so he can see during the day what he's looking at.

I am going to go back out and try to find the plug, I didn't see it before, but the "above the axel, about 2" plug" should narrow it down pretty well for me. lol

Re: Gear Oil (?) or tranny fluid?

Ok ... I am going to go ahead and try to help out my boyfriend just a little bit, if I can find this plug, I can fill it myself -- can anyone see it on these pictures? I ran out and took these pictures real fast ... lol ....
