He can't make good on his threats without inviting a huge retaliation that he could not win against.

So where does that leave us? Seems to be we'll have to wait for either side to make a move.

He has until April 28 to cease uranium enrichment, I'm not sure what exactly the UN has in mind to do after that but we will see shortly.

It would be nice to leave it to Israel. Their military is very capable. Their intelligence agency is the best in the world.

There is a Tom Clancy book on the Marine Corps, a work of non-fiction depicting the various training, weapons and unit break downs they use, focusing particularly on the MEUs, or Marine Expeditionary Units. Those are elements of about 1500 marines that are garrisoned on ships in an aircraft carrier battle group. They have assault craft with them, helicopters and supplies so they can be deployed anywhere with a coast line or within a few hundred miles of one. In Afghanistan, an MEU was the first large American force on the ground.

Why bring this up? In the back of the book Clancy provided two examples of how an MEU might be used.

One of the examples was Iran obtaining (or was it developing?) a small nuclear aresenal of a few warheads. The MEU was used to knock out the facility, secure the weapons and withdraw, precluding a large invasion.

Not really anything I believe applies to this situation, just something I had read and remembered.

If we're going to go all rabid over Iran's nuclear capabilities, why haven't we done anything about N. Korea? We already know N.K. has ballistic missile capabilities and they do a bit of sword rattling now and then.

I suppose we could always wait until a dirty bomb goes off in Manhattan, and "track" it back to Iran. That would give us a good reason to go there and blow shit up.

Attacking Iran because they're sabre rattling would be hypocritical. It's like arresting people based on race when they're children so they can't grow up to do something bad later. Until Iran does something, they haven't done anything.

Yeah our best solution is to wait for Iran to nuke the hell out of someone and then maybe, just maybe, we could take out any nukes they have - except for, of course, the one(s) they've used. Its not like they've threatened to whipe another country off the face of the earth or anything like that.

Well, it comes down to whether they would actually do it or not, doesn't it?

Sabre rattling is sabre rattling. And threats are made every day that aren't carried out. I'm sure Iran's scientists are telling them that the fallout from any nuclear activity to their west would blanket their own country...but will that make a difference? And do they really hate the Israelis enough to kill themselves as well as millions of other Muslims, Arabs, Greeks, Turks, and other peoples at the same time? It's the same MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction) strategy that existed between the US and the Soviet Union - Iran wouldn't be able to fire without Israel firing back. I'm sure that Israel has radar to detect the launch and has their missiles already targeted. -edit- Do you actually think they are that stupid, Yogs?

Of course there's always the biblical portrayal of the earth being destroyed by fire. And I'm sure there's a quatrain of Nostradamus out there that describes the whole thing so it's obviously a foregone conclusion.

And here's another twist: What if Iran's target isn't really the Israelis, but rather the US Army? We've got so much invested in Iraq - in men, material and time; it would be devastating to lose all or most of it. Further, the Iran/Iraq war of the 80's may still be a factor in all of this. What if they intend to use the nukes against the army of "The Great Satan" in an effort to reduce the power of the US and destroy their old enemy Iraq at the same time? Much better use of nukes than going after little old Israel.

There's no denying they're a bunch of unstable nutjobs over there and something needs to be done. But asking the soldiers of the US to undertake another unprovoked war isn't the answer.

This brings up an interesting point. Israel is only a few hundred miles from the western Iraqi border. Is Iran crazy enough to just wipe out their neighbors in the process and risk harm to their own soil?
