1989 olds quits running while driving

hello. first post here. seems very informative as i've looked thru some. i have a 1989 olds 98 regency that has a stutter. last couple weeks has been acting up. actually quit on me as i was driving it. to the point... runs then dies turns over but does not start let it sit for a bit then fires up again. took into shop and they replaced the crank sensor. now they tell me the ECC needs replacing. question... does this ECC need replacing and can i change this module myself. they quoted me for a used item at $150.00 + labor and i've done a search on internet for 1 and came across 1 for $40.00 plus s/h im trying to save a buck and DIY any help please. thanks.
