EVO IX vs. STi

First race with a STi and I lost. It wasn't a pretty race due to traffic, so it was difficult to line up next to each other. But from what I could tell, his car was about a good car and a half faster. Not sure on his mods, looked stockish, but doubt it was. My IX has trapped a best of 104mph with a drop in air filter, so that was a pretty quick STi (if it was stock). Time for some mods, plan to get TBE, MBC, and Tuned real soon. My total mods with tune, will amount to less than $1,000, gonna try to crack 11s with Race Gas and more boost, not sure if I can do it though with me driving, LOL. As far as the STi, good job, gave him the thumbs up afterwards, you win some and you lose some.

Re: EVO IX vs. STi

Nice Loss. The Sti seems like a good car to gauge against for mods planned for your IX. By the sound of what you have planned you'll be good competition for the Sti next time around.

Re: EVO IX vs. STi

He stallowned you. But... personally I prefer the Evo looks now over the STi.

But, if I had the choice of choosing between the two to buy. I'd have a hard time choosing, I like them both equally for many reasons.

Anywaysss... ummm better luck next time.

Re: EVO IX vs. STi

STI's and EVO's are quick off the line, that's about it. Well at least from my experiences. Hey dont' the IX's have bigger turbo's then the previous generation EVO? What are they rated for HP/Trq vs. the VIII?

Ummmm Evo's and STI's are both very quick on the top end.... Not quite sure what you're smokin... I managed to pull on an EVO 8 in LS1 but I didn't pull too quickly...

I don't think the turbo is technically any bigger in the IX, but it is more efficient.

The IX's are rated at 15 more HP than the VIII (286 VS 271). The IX's also have MIVEC (Mitsubishi's variable valve timing) and respond very well to mods.

Re: EVO IX vs. STi

Yeah that STi was pretty quick, not sure on mods, but like I said doubt it's stock. I've pulled a car on 2001 SVT Cobra from a roll, so the car is no slouch. I just noticed something yesterday though, I had a flat tire in the rear, yeah I know, how did I not know this, well all this happend pretty late at night and I noticed the flat in the morning. Yeah I bought a new tire gauge and was messing around with my tires and I guess I messed around too much with one. How much of a difference would a flat tire make in acceleration from a roll, just wondering?

STI's (it's NOT "STi" anymore for the 2006 models and up) trap between .5 to 1mph than Evo IX's, stock-for-stock, and in recent head-to-head comparisons, ET about .4 seconds faster.

Re: EVO IX vs. STi

The power on the STI has gone unchanged since it hit the USDM as a MY04 at 300hp/300tq. Since then there have been some improvements to the drivetrain and suspension however. The '03 and '04 USDM Evo VIII was rated at 271hp and was not quite as quick as the '04 STi from the factory. In '05 Mistubishi made some changes to the hotside and the tune, among other things, and bumped the advertised HP/TQ ratings.

The tuner I take my car to, Gruppe-S, works on both cars. Since the '05 VIII came out, they've been making consistenly bigger base dyno numbers than the STI. Not by a lot, but enough where it's newsworthy I think. The '05 VIII should be a quicker factory car, in almost any performance situation, than the '05 STi.

Enter the Evo IX. It's 16g now has a bigger compressor housing and the valvetrain has a variable rate intake cam. On paper Mitsubishi gave it another 5hp over the '05 VIII, but on a dyno it'll put at least another 10whp down. When you figure in drivetrain loss, the IX is probably closer to 320hp than 290hp. I'm jealous. But that's not the best part. With a simple 3" TBE and EcuTek flash on the Evo IX Gruppe-S has been able to put down the same numbers as an Evo VIII with 3" TBE, EcuTek flash, JDM MR BOV, 272/272 aftermarket cams, and a Walbro fuel pump.

I know about the 2006 STI, but this wasn't a 2006 model, this was a 2004-2005 which was called the STi. Also the STi/STI does not trap higher than a stock IX, who ever told you that told you wrong, stock IXs have been trapping 105-106mph, I myself, trapped nearly 104mph, bone stock with 91 octane gas, and with the drop in air filter I trap over 104mph. What recent head-to-head comparison are you talking about, Road and Track, Car and Driver, Motor Trend, or Real Life, the IX is faster and also makes more power stock for stock, end of story. If you choose not to believe me, than that's fine, but please put the time in to research (as I have) to make a valid argument.

Anyways the STi in this race seemed faster, I know a STi/STI makes good power with bolt ons, but my IX makes tremendous power with bolt ons. TBE, MBC, and Tuning to trake place within the next three weeks, hope to run low 12s on pump gas, and high 11s with race gas, but honestly not sure with me driving, LOL.

Re: EVO IX vs. STi

Good loss. I miss my former Evo alot, but after seeing what everyone says, I would just hold off until I saved enough money for an Evo IX.

Then again I think i'll just keep my bird.

Well not the one's i've run into, sorry don't know what to tell ya. Maybe they couldn't drive. But on the highway there aint' much shifting you have to do so....i dunno whatever i just know that they aint that quick from a roll. Say what you want, but it hasn't been the case with me. Also what was done to your LS1 anything? It would take very little work for an ls1 to destroy an STI or Evo from a roll. I'm thinking mostly gears.
