OK, I'm most likely going to be getting a Lancer Evo VII, if not VI. I'm in the USA, and looking at the specs etc... ok.. here we go...
______ Engine Type Inline-4 Engine Block Cast Iron Cylinder Head Aluminum Alloy Displacement 2.0 Liters Horsepower 120 @ 5500 Torque 130 @ 4250 Redline 6000 Bore and Stroke 81.5 x 95.8 Compression Ratio 9.5:1 - The specs of the O•Z RALLY. 1) 120 HP? What tha? Isnt the Jap EVOVII like 270? 2) Any Ideas on a price? and how much is the Jap? 3) What are import fees? Say I get a $25000 one, how much they gonna add on if I import it? 4) I've been thinking, what if I took a 1 month vacation to Japan, bought the car, and brought it back with me? Would I be able to dodge import taxes that way? Thanks for the help... |

The EVO VI/VII is a 2 liter intercooled turbo and has 280 horses. It's not available in the US and my latest info regarding personalized imports for the US is a definite NONO. Not even as a demonstartor and 5,000 miles per year use. Seems the gouvernement changed the ruling for the new millenium.

yeah, the US customs has practically BANNED EVO VIIs for street use. STupid government. There are a couple companies that have apparently found a way to bring them in legally though. I'm sure a good lawyer could find a loophole to get one in. Its still gonna cost one helluva lot of money to make that car legal in the US by yourself...if its even possible.

Um, it's not a rumor... :P
http://www.2002lancer.com/home.cfm - The 2002 Lancer, right? http://www.2002lancer.com/evovii.cfm - The 2002 Lancer EVO VII! Hey Hey! :P Yeah, I thought everyone already knew about that, heh... sorry :P Oh wait.. http://www.mitsubishicars.com/car_ho...sa?model=lan02 - ![]() I read earlier O-Z RALLY = EVO VII... Right Wow.. a Evo VII for 18000USD? I'm missing something, right? So then you go to HP... Horsepower @ rpm (SAE net):120 @ 5500 - WTF is that? 120 HP? Is this a toned down engine or what? I'm not getting it.. Unless of course the O-Z RALLY isnt an evo... of course by the looks of it all the 2002 Lancer cars aren't Lancers at that HP... Did they just stick a Mirage in a Lancer body? or.. what gives? |

no, the OZ rally isn't an evo. Its just a standard lancer with a body package, as well as some interior trim that is shared with the EVO ( i.e. brushed aluminum, white face guages, sports steering wheel, etc...) Its still a 2.0L 120 hp fwd econobox. ITs bigger than it used to be though, and might be able to take a 4g63t from an eclipse a bit easier than the old mirage, so you could possibly try to do a conversion if you aren't patient enough to actually wait for a definitive word on the real EVO. It also shares the same unibody with the EVO VII (whatever that means). I'm holding out for the real deal though.
The lancer seems like a neat car in its own right though, I think it is definitely an extremely attractive and sporty-looking car. Much better looking than alot of the other sub compacts on the Market right now in the US, Plus evo VII bodykits are already starting to surface. Might be a nice little tuner car to have if you don't want to shell out the big bucks for an EVO. I'm sort of irked by Mitsubishi not including a more powerful engine for the OZ rally edition, but if I always had my way an EVO would be sitting in my driveway right now. |

oh, and in response to the last question in your original post. Yes, it would be less expensive for you to bring it back from japan if you went and personally picked it up yourself. You would still run into some pretty serious taxes, but I think I read somewhere that it is less severe or something. In fact, if you go to www.bestjapancar.com, they have a link that will take you to a customs regulations page that will give you all the information you need to know about importing a vehicle. It is extremely lengthy and, in true US government form, difficult to comprehend documentation. A possibility, that i'm not totally certain of the legality, is importing it to Mexico (where I believe they have less strict laws regarding this type of thing), legalizing it there, then personally driving it into the states. This is very costly as well as possibly illegal, but could cost less and be easier than trying to get it directly into the US from Japan or europe or wherever you buy the car. The reason I bring up Europe is I believe there are LHD EVOs in Spain and Germany and not having to do a complete drive conversion cuts tens of thousands of dollars out of making an EVO street legal in the US. PHEW....that just about exhausts everything I know about importing an EVO into the states. Check out that Bestjapancar.com site I pointed you toward, they know their stuff much better than I do.

The Lancer EVO is sold in Germany as the Carisma EVO (it's a marketing thing). Fortunately through Ralliart Germany one can get a LHD Lancer badged EVO. The EVO is not officially available in the Netherlands, but through the German channel I got mine.
The fact that LHD are available makes me wonder why a company called evoimports are stating that they will have to convert the RHD to LHD. You can even buy LHD EVO's in the UK. These come straight from factory. Nico |

yeah, I sort of wonder that too. Probably because its cheaper to get one from Japan than a country that is already charging import taxes.

the evo has "276 bhp" in Japan, their legal limit-this is the same maximum as the supra, wrx, rx7, skyline, gto, and NSX-howver, the manufacturers lie and most of these cars go well beyond 276

They didn't lie...
276 is the factory standard, if you modify from wut the factory offers, that's wut you'll get... Of course you can add after market kits, have a 32 psi turbo, a GTR can get 1200 hp |
