Exclamation 2001 Jetta - Gearing is way too low...please help

I hope someone can explain what's going on with my '01 Jetta. When I am in 5th gear on the highway my car does 65 mph at 3000 rpm! Which translates into about 3800 rpm between 75-80 mph! Other than that the car runs fine...what in the hell is wrong with my car? or more appropriately my transmission? Is it built this way? This jetta is not turbo equipped nor is it a diesel.

First things first, is your car manual? and where is the redline at? as far as the range it is just fine where its at cause thats how it was built. I have a 1.8t 2002 and when I go 120 in my car for example I'm only at a little over 4000 with plenty more room to go. for me 80 in 5th is just a bit over 3000
