i have 99 astro van. How do you test to see if the fuel pump relay is working properly....or any relay for that matter.

Thanks.

Re: how to test relay?

On my '97, the A/C and the pump relay are the same, and they're beside each other. Just swap them. that's the easy way.

Re: how to test relay?

Turn on the ignition and listen carefully. The pump should run for a two-second prime cycle. If so, the relay is working properly and supplying power to the pump. This prime cycle will occur once, and the ignition must be turned off fo 20 seconds before it will occur again. The relay will also close and power the pump as soon as the PCM receives pulses for the cam or crank position sensors or rotational pulses from the distributor.

If the pump does not run in this mode, either the PCM has problems, the pump circuit connections or the pump is failing, or the relay is not operating.

They are not relayed.
A good engine capable scanner will check the pcm tempt sensor.
For the dash gauge you will need a good volt/ohm meter and a good wiring diagram from a good repair manual.
Factory service manual or http://www.alldata.com/products/diy/index.html
And sometimes the auto zone site has some info and wiring diagrams.

Re: how to test relay?

thx for the reply, good to know it is not a relay. i will got to autozone and have them scan it monday. i don't know what fuse to look for in the haynes manual and contour user's guide. it doesn't show the coolant temp sensor or temp gauge fuse in the fuse section. can you tell me which fuse to look for? would it be the pcm fuse?
thx

This is a old post started by someone else on a different problem.
It would be better for you to start a new post on your problem and give as much info on it as you can.

Like.
Tips on getting a good answer to your questions.
People trying to answer your question do not have a crystal ball.
So give them all of the info you have like year make and model and engine and transmission and mileage.
Also cars engine and transmission service history or any recent repairs or problems.
Also a description of your problem and what it is doing or not doing.
If you have codes give up the code no.
And remember a code does not say replace the part but only points to the problem that you have to check out.
So to better help you give up all of the info you have on it.

Re: how to test relay?

Go to forums then go to Chevrolet. then go to Astro.
Then upper left corner part of it you should see a NEW THREAD button.
Click on it and you are on your way to a new post.
Good luck
As Old master says go to the right forum. I was heading you wrong.
Sorry about that.

Re: how to test relay?

The vehicle in question is a 98 Ford Contour, it would be best to post in the appropriate forum.
