96 to 99 Drivetrain Swap

Since I can't find my original post, I had to start another. Well the warm weather has finaly arrived in the Northeast, so it's back to my 99 CVPI project car. Now that I am getting ready to drop the 96 drive train into the 99, I have more questions that have to be settled before I go any further.
Most of the responses about the swap were that there should be no problems, but I have found more wiring problems, I found that the transmission selector switch was different, after much tugging and pulling, I was able to remove the one from the 99 and put on the 96 trans. I did change the speed sensor, just for good measure, because the 2 cars had different ratio rearends. The O2 sensors use different plugs, so I have to rewire them.
The next major problem I have is the C111 connector on the transmission, I have downloaded pictures and diagrams for both,and have come up with a way to wire the 96 to work with the 99 harness. But now I see that the Torque Conveter Clutch Solenoid is used in the 99 but not the 96. My main concern is that if I use a 96 transmission will it have the necessary parts (TCC)in the trans to work properly?

The '96 and '99 transmissions are the same model, the 4R70W, and both have the TCC solenoid.

Go to www.tccoa.com and look in the tech sections under transmission. You will find the pin outs for the various years, and how to re-pin the connector to work with the '96 trans.


You might have a problem just swapping VSS gears. There are 7 and 8 tooth driven gears (inside the trans), and I *think* the '96s had 8 teeth while the '99 CVPI has 7 (orange gear).

The BEST way to correct speedo error is to use a GPS to find the true speed vs indicated, and adjust accordingly with the VSS gears (your local dealer has them all).

Thanks, I do have the wiring diagrams already. I havn't been able to find a suitable pin removal tool, none of the ones I use with the 2-way radios fit, and Ford doesn't carry one either, so I am going to cut the harness and wire accordingly ( solder and shrink wrap). As far as the VSS gears I am presuming you mean for the speedo, well I removed both and they are both Orange, so I installed the 99 one in the 96 transmission. I let you know how I makeout, I plan on dropping the drive train in on Monday, weather permitting.

Nearly every auto parts store sells "terminal removal" tools. Mine is green with 5 or 6 sides with a different device for removing the terminals from the connectors on each side. I do not recall the brand.

I would NOT solder any wire splice on a vehicle, but crimp and seal. Solder makes the wires stiff and instead of bending as they should, they simply break.

Alright the engine/trans is in. Not too bad a job about 30 min to align them up. I used a load leveler, mounted in line with the engine /trans, not the way I suspect you are supposed to use it, but it worked. After jacking the rear of the car up about 18 in, I set the load leveler to about 30 deg angle. Ran the engine hoist in towards the engine bay, lifted up the tail of the trans over the grill and in. I got about half way in and realized I wans't going to make it on one shot. I lowered the engine on to a 2x10 sitting on the crossmember and disconnected the back chains, lifted the engine up, poked it in towards the rear of the car, where I had a pump jack to help it into where the cross member is. A little jiggling, and it dropped right in. Jacked the tail up, installed the crossmember and driveshaft. Total time less than 2 hours. A much better way than trying to mate the engine to trans. I did find that I would have had more room to work if I removed the wiper motor assembly. Now one of my problems, is I suspect I broke the Trans position switch. I had a lot of trouble getting it off the other trans. I am not able to key the starter, and when I bypass that switch I can crank the engine. Where might I find a wiring diagram of the switch and where it comes out on the wiring harness so I can ring out the contacts.

I looked through TCCOA, unless it's in a member only are , I found nothing on the trans switch wiring. Any help would be appreciated.

Ok, all I could find quickly was for a 2000 4R70W..

You should have a 12 pin connector for the DTR switch (Digital Transmission Range).

Pins: (1st is power, 2nd is output)

9 (LB/PK),11 (BK/PK) = Back up
10 (DB/OR),12 (TN/RD) = Starting

2,3,4,5,6 are position inputs/outputs to the PCM.

2 = common feed to PCM pin 91.
3 (LB/YE) = Gears 1,2,P
4 (YE/BK) = Gears N,R,P
5 (LB/BK) = Gears 2,R,P
6 (WH/BK) = Gears 1,N,P

Note: "OD" is not wired to any terminal.

Thank you very much, I'll spend some time on that now, since it is holding me up. I don't want to put the car back together any further untill I correct this issue.

OK, heres the update, car is basically back together. Found a few more gremlins in it, caused by the agency I bought it from. 3 bad CoP's, their mechanics have a nasty habit of putting bad parts into a blown motor or bad tranny car after the fact. I had to replace the valve cover on one side of the engine from the accident in the original car, now it leaks oil bad, so I have to take out the wiper assembly to get it off again. The rear tranny seal is leaking?? Didn't have that problem before I pulled it out of the original car. I may take the 96 drive shaft and put it in instead. other wise I'll just replace the seal. After all that is solved then the only thing left is to replace one hose on the AC and charge it.
