Ralliart 3000gt Overheating problem solved

Any way I think I mentioned this a while ago, My 3kgt was over heating, I knew it could have been a number of things and didn’t have the time to look and was thinking about transporting her up to Ralliart, since I was due for a dynotune any way.

At the end I decided not to due to the cost of having her transported up to Auckland for something that could be a small issue, and also the fact that a new guy (no belt) from the Dojo who was a mechanic said he would have a look at her and see what the problem was.

Had this guy who I had known for maybe a month come to my dads place and have a look at the issues that could be causing my car to overheat, anyway after getting me to start her he was searching all over for a leak, looked to see how much water was in the overflow etc while me and my dad observed.

As soon as my car started to over heat he was like fuck, mmmm, man (I was like WTF, say it) anyway after a half hour of looking he said that I had bought a dud and that the over heating was due to cracks in the headers and at best the head gaskets. I was totally pissed and thought this guy came way to fast in his conclusions not that I showed it. Anyway I know the basics when it comes to cars, although I hinted to him earlier that I was blond when it came to working on anything with four wheels. He told me to bring my car in to his freinds workshop so that they could have a look at the engines heads/head gaskets and see where the issues was for a fee of ($500.00)

Then if the headers were stuffed replace them or if they were too custom to replace, shaved the stock head, and add few other stock parts to make em fit, (at this point I was shocked) then he said given that you have these stock part we might need to replace the injectors for smaller one’s and that I would have to run low boost.

He told me to get ready to spend $6000.00+ for the job about $4-5000USA

It was obvious at this point that he wanted my engine. An was looking to replace it with a stock motor.

Anyway when this guy left I asked my dad for his opinion (kind of already know given the look on his face. Told me he was close to knocking this guy out for all of the shit he was saying.

Here is a few things I expected him to say.
  • Get a compression test, which will give you an indication on the health of your vehicles engine.
  • Get an Auto electrician to test the health of your vehicles electrics.
  • I would have also expected him to tell me to get a few opinions from other Mechanics and not refer me strait on to his friend (which I found out is actually him).
  • Blah blah blah blah blah!!!!
Anyway after about a month of her sitting in the garage she gets smashed by some retards like you know, but luckily only the hood and lights.

Recently there was a long weekend so I had 2 days to check my car out, I took her to a mechanic who I’ve had dealing with my previous 3kgt and he told me that since the car was overheating he couldn’t complete the compression test. He took out my thermostat and still the car would overheat, and since he couldn’t fix the problem charged me nothing (great guy). Well I got the auto electrician in who said he could find nothing wrong with my electrics although my fan would kick in a bit late sometimes so he suggested that he would hook it up to the ignition so that it would be on from the time I started the car. So while doing this he actually found that my fans engine was bust, and the fan was not working under load. Had him fixed this problem which in turn fixed my heating issue for something like $150.00.

Glad you had enough sense to stay away from anyone saying it costs 5 grand to change a head gasket. Amazing what kinda crap people will say or try to pull. Glad you got it fixed. Next time, feel free to post up your problems in more detail, and we can actually try and help you troubleshoot.

^^^ Correct and not mention he would have had a stock motor then. Glad to hear it is now fixed and the fan repair was only $150 as oppose to the $4-5k like that guy wanted to charge you for a HG.
