1997 gtp rough idle
I've got a 1997 GTP that has developed a rough idle when sitting at stop signs or lights. I changed plugs and wires, fuel filter. The check engine light is on for a mass air flow. would that cause it to be acting up? I've checked on the price for the and it is around a hundred dollars. I'd like to make sure before I go out and buy it and put it in. Another question I've got is the tranny, when it is cold it seems like the rpms run a little higher when it is in overdrive. Once it warms up it runs fine. Is that anything I should be worried about? Oh by the way, the car has 230,000 miles on it and still trying to go strong.

Re: 1997 gtp rough idle
230K miles?
The MAF wiil cause a rough idle. Go with the DTC error code and SES light and replace the MAF sensor. BTW - Normally the ones for around $100 are remanufactured so it is not uncommon to see the replacement not correct the problem. Do you have the throttle body screen in or out? Plus post the error code if you have it.

Re: 1997 gtp rough idle
Throttle body screen has been out for about 100k miles, I don't have the code off hand, but i'll get when I get a chance.

Re: 1997 gtp rough idle
To add to Bob's suggestions, do you have a CAI or K&N style reusable air filter? It's common for the oil from these to get into MAF sensors and muck them up.

Re: 1997 gtp rough idle
Because either you know how to oil one properly, or the oil flies by it so fast it can't possibly stick,

Re: 1997 gtp rough idle
Don't worry about the RPM's being higher until the transmission is warmed up. That's just how the PCM warms up the tranny faster when it's cold out. As long as it fully engages into OD when it's warm, you have no problems.
