Question 2001 shifter

I was wondering if anyone had, or could find a schematic or instuctions on how to take the shifter out of my 2001 oldsmobile alero. Its the 2 door GL 5 speed version and i wanted to put in a new short throw shifter but i cant find instructions on how to tak it out. Also i was wondering how to take the shift knob of.

thanks

Re: 2001 shifter

Probably a good idea to remove the center console. On the knob there should be a clip/retainer that looks like a staple that needs to be removed. It is on the backside of the knob.

He's got a manual. I don't think they have the same clips as the automatics. I thought that the knob just screwed off and the leather boot would just unsnap. Am I wrong?

I really don't know. I heard there might be a retaining pin someplace on the knob and then twist off but its not the same as the automatics. What did Oldsmobile do, weld it on?
