Re: 97 civic black smoke?

I'd start by checking the small things first - replace your air filter, and your spark plugs. A bottle of fuel system cleaner wouldn't hurt either. Black smoke means the engine is running rich (fuel:air ratio has too much fuel - or too little air).

Re: 97 civic black smoke?

Hard - not at all, the O2 sensor simply bolts on, just like a spark plug.

Expensive - well, they run about $70-80 apeice, and you usually have to replace both of them at the same time.

Re: 97 civic black smoke?

replace it yourself. Buy one from an auto place.. like autozone, and make sure you rent out the o2 sensor ratchet adaptor too. This is an easy job, you can do it yourself. As for the lower o2 sensor, well are you comfortable with cralling under your car?

the upper one is hella easy to see, i checked it out, how would i know which is bad or if either is bad? any way to tell...

and yea i don't mind gettin under my car, just gotta find it along the exhaust pipe...

i'll go to autozone tomorrow and see what they charge for them and then rent the tool, probably do the upper one 1st being as it looks incredibly easy to do..

Re: 97 civic black smoke?

Dont worry about the rental tool. Autozone makes you put like a 15 dollar deposit down on it but if you bring it back theyll give you back your money. O2 sensors shouldnt be that expensive...good luck.
