Oil Leak Normal?

Well, another problem with my Jeep.

I have a 2003 Wrangler Sport. Oil is leaking from between the engine and transmission. I took it to the dealership this morning. Guess what they told me... it is NORMAL! WHAT?! I have so had it with Jeep service. That can't possible be true.

Has anyone else received this type of service? I live in central VA (Richmond). ANyone out there know of a respectable Jeep service department?

Re: Oil Leak Normal?

If it is still under warranty make them fix it... There is nothing in the owner's manual about routine oil leaks. I am sure that they are not going to tell you that is supposed to leak. If it isn't under warranty then do the check the oil thing periodically and live with it.

Re: Oil Leak Normal?

Leaky rear main seals and leaky valve covers may be "common" but I would never consider an oil leak "normal". It can also be difficult to tell the two apart without looking hard. Obviously the valve cover is much easier and less expensive to fix than the rear main. If you feel you need to get the leak fixed, make sure of what is leaking before plopping money down for labor. If its under warranty, have them fix it because, while it may be common, its not supposed to leak.
The rear of the 4.0 in my XJ is always wet but doesnt leak enough to effect the oil level or even drip. Its done it for a few years and Ive never bothered to fix it and probably wont as long as it doesnt get worse.

Re: Oil Leak Normal?

Thanks all for the kind words. The Jeep is still under warranty. So, after much deabte over the leak, they have opted to fix it. Of course, they didn't even order the part yet... and they still calimed they couldn't hear the loud clunk in the engine. As a matter of fact, they were more worried aboiut my rear diff fluid being changed than anything else. I told them I'd do it before my seal change appointment and let them know if it solved the clunk (not likely). Well, I changed the fluid last night and the clunk is still there. To add a little salt in my wounds, the fluid was pristine... (I am a vigorous maintainer of my vehicles).

Oh well, I hope they at least do the job right when they do finally get to it. The thing to remember is that while something might be "normal" it isn't necessarily correct. (someone else previously stated here, and my argument to them yesterday). My leaky seal had been a problem since early on, and they blamed it on everything else. With oil dripping out, there was no way they could deny it this visit.

Re: Oil Leak Normal?

Leak + Warranty in effect = dealer, suck it up!

On an older vehicle, you might try this stuff: www.auto-rx.com. I've used it, and it work as advertised, though I can't vouch for the claims it will stop leaks, I switched a 90K 4.0L from regular to synthetic oil, without leaks.
