A sports writer nails it right on the head

This might be one of the best articles about the bonds issue and current state of american affairs i've read in a while.

If it's the era of anything, it's the Era of Predictable Disillusionment: a half-decade in which many long-standing fears about how America works (and what America has come to represent) were gradually -- and then suddenly -- hammered into the collective consciousness of just about everyone, including all the people who hadn't been paying attention to begin with.

Fuck him.

Bonds needs to be banned from baseball. NOW.

He's hurt baseball and sports more than Pete Rose ever did.

Naw, it's the way things are now. Integrity and sportsmanship are laughed at now, as if the only people who give a rip about it are freaks and losers.

It's promoted as the American way to win at ANY cost, even the cost to one's health. I lost interest in professional sports a long time ago. This stuff is nothing new, but it's now the only thing we ever hear about, and there's no way to compete without artificial enhancement.

Screw all that. Let's drop the charade and let them all juice the hell out of themselves, then the playing field will be level, except the team that can afford the best medications will be the victors.

Why pretend otherwise?

My dad and I both agree that if baseball goes on strike again, it probably won't come back. It seems less and less people give a rat's ass. I mean honestly, these guys are protesting for playing A DAMN KID'S GAME.

Boo-fuckin-who. So you're getting paid 1.1 million and not 2.2. Shut the hell up! You're getting paid a whole lot more for doing something my 11 year old brother does on the weekends for fun than most people who actually deserve that money.

This is why I've become more and more interested in college sports. There is some bad things there but the players seem to be more into it. They're not driven by money (ok, maybe not as much money) like the pro-players.

Re: A sports writer nails it right on the head

If you followed last years whitesox team, it was not about money with those guys, it was 100% pride. It may be a little more about money now but the majority of those guys play because they love the game, and i know people like them far outweigh the people in baseball who are only about the money. But i agree i dont watch football or basketball anymore cause of how boring and pathetic it is now.

Re: A sports writer nails it right on the head

There have been a lot of rotten bastards in the game who disgraced themselves by their actions, but never tarnished the onfield product itself. The players taking performance enhancers are the ones ruining the product and themselves.

doesn't just go about bond, i think this guy really did hit the nail on the head, as far as everything goes.

Same here. I quit playing baseball right before the strike. I then quit watching it altogether afterwards. It took my dad up until '98 or '99 to even pay the slightest attention.

Bonds is a moron. It's not publicized or talked about his life in the locker room. He's away from the team, has his own everything so he can focus on who else but Barry Bonds. He's so egotistical.

About Pete Rose, it makes me sick that people want him banned from the Hall of Fame for his gambling. He shouldn't have done it, thats obvious. But the man was incredible, and he looked like a fat slob playing the game as gracefully as he did. He deserves to be in the Hall, Barry does not.

Re: A sports writer nails it right on the head

A friend posted a video on myspace http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm...endid=11352706

Reading this made me think of that video. Baseball was something as kids(alot of kids atleast) we loved playing. It wasnt always about winning or losing. It was fun. Slowly as people got older the game changed. It became more about winning, and alot more serious. Yet it was still fun. I've played baseball every summer since i was 4 years old. Now im 21 and i still play. I would love to compete at a major league level. Its sickening that ANYONE would complain about making money, PLAYING a game.

When you were a kid it was about having fun. If the game isnt fun then there is no game at all. Just another day at the office. Thats where sports turn to bullshit.

Re: A sports writer nails it right on the head

Barry Bonds will probably be dead in a decade because of the drugs he's taken. For what? He sacrificed 1/2 his life to hit some more homers. Probably doesn't realize that there will be an asterisk next to his records indicating he was juiced.

If I could play a game that I loved, even for 35K a year, it would be great. Some of these guys are so wrapped up in their agents' visions of $$$ that they don't know how good they have it.

I agree with several posts.....let Barry go and bring back Pete.

Re: A sports writer nails it right on the head

Yesterday while riding up to a Brenham for a family fish fry I told my dad to flip on Jim Rome. I always enjoy his shows, but couldn't have caught a better one. He had former SI sportswriter Jeff Pearlman who has a book out this week entitled Barry Bonds the Making of an Anti-Hero.

This guy had so many stories on Bonds and shows just how self-absorbed and egotistcle this guy truely is. They did raise they question too of how much of an affect did his father, Bobby Bonds, have on him. He was an alcoholic among other things that probably did shape Bonds into who he really is.

But this book I believe comes out on Tuesday, and after hearing this interview it's a must for all who are intrigued by Bonds and his image.

Re: A sports writer nails it right on the head

I have a question: Why do people get angry when someone uses an unfair advantage to win in a sports competition yet no one says a word when a country uses an unfair advantage in a military competition. It's no big deal apparently that countries can use billion dollar helicoptors, unmaned weapanized robots, 50 cal rifles that can accurately shoot through a steel plate at over two and a half miles, and a huge array of advanced technology against a competitor that has 1/1,000,000th the military budget, used outdated weapons, poor training, etc. This is a contradiction...
