paint question silver as a first coat?

What is the purpose of a first coat of silver under let say a red .Does it give a different effect? Is it considered the primer coat in these situations or is there still a primer underneath? Thank You

I guess it depends on what color you are working with. For example, when I worked on my WRC subaru, I used a silver coat underneath before I spray mica blue to give it a metallic look. The mica blue color is quite transparent, the undercoat will show through the mica blue.

Some people also do something like this on metallic color. They spray a coat of gloss black underneath before they apply metallic colors. This gives the metallic color maximum reflection as a result.

The silver is definitely NOT a primer. You must always use primer to allow the paint to stick to the plastic. Use primer first, then apply silver.
