engine block casting numbers

i have a question, i know it's the wrong forum, but someone here should know, on my moms bonneville they swapped engines, was supposed to be from a monte carlo but the receipt said oldsmobile 88 or something like that....where would the casting numbers be on the block to find out? she's needing a new dipstick cos the one in it is broken, would one off any 3.8l engine work? i looked but didn't see the casting numbers. thanks for any help!

Re: engine block casting numbers

Casting #'s are usually right under the right side cylinder head and definately in the bellhousing area on the "back" of the motor.

As long as they are of the same year and front wheel drive, what it came out of (GM wise) ashouldn't matter.

On the stick about the same answer, just eyeball it and makesure the level indicaters and length are good between them.
