A buddy of mine had the same problem. He had to call several dealers before one of them would provide the code without a fee. He had to give him the serial # of the radio (located on back of unit) before they can provide an unlocking code.

Re: Stereo Codes

Thanks for the advice.. I assume you either have to take it someplace, or have one of those tools to pop out the radio..so you can see the back?

That's correct! Buddy said he removed the radio but didn't mention any details about its removal. It was a couple years back when he did it and I'm just recalling it from memory.

Re: Stereo Codes

i have the same problem with my 94 jetta but the only thing that is different is I can't get it out of SAFE mode. when I hold mode and scan together, SAFE blinks 6 times but will not get over to the 4 diget code display, any help on how to get the radio working again would be helpfull

Re: Stereo Codes

my 91 jetta VW heidleberg radio will only let you enter a code 2x then it locks out for 1 hour. Dealer wants $45 to look it up. It is made by Mitsushita which I think is part of Panasonic. I've tried 6 combinations but no luck yet. My barcode for id'ing the radio is VWZ5Z7B58 1732
the model #357 035 180AX. The 4 digit code is something between 999-1999.
That's a zillion combo's, I wish the prev owner would have left it somewhere to be found...frustrating...bad marks for VW making the cheap radio theft proof... to the owner.

Smile Re: Stereo Codes

Get the serial number for your VW Radio,
Call 1-613-822-6570 it is a Canadian VW dealership so if you gotta do any funky dialing before i'm sure you can figure that out.

They'll ask you if you service your car there, just say "No but I just bought the car from a previous owner and I'm not sure where he serviced it." and then they'll just give you the code for free.

I Did this today myself!
